Hi all

Was just wondering what everybody's opinions are on re-building Turbo's yourself, and how many have done so, and with what sort of success.

You hear a lot out there saying "your wasting your time without the proper knowledge and equipment and there are issues regarding balancing.

And most of the kits of eBay are just crappy Chinese copy's.

i rebuilt a china t28 turbo with a kando bearing kit for my 180 which i advise anyone that buys a no name china turbo to do before you install it and i put 3000kms on it and its still in mint condition. aslong as you line everything back up as you took it off i dont see it being an issue. Im only running 15psi on it though..

I built 3 x genuine TD05s with 20G wheels around 4 years ago, the kit was from Kinugawa on ebay, didnt need to balance and no failures yet after running 20psi through at least 1 of them

Theres a link on youtube how to rip apart and build them, remember to do the bolts to correct torque specs otherwise you'll snap them, ive snapped the shaft from an RVR TD05 :(

if your just doing the bearings and the rest of the components are in good condition you wouldnt need to balance? aslong as you mark the nut/shaft before you undo it and put it back when your done it should remain balanced.

being involved with "balancing" shit on an every day basis....I would still get the balance checked after assembly. Now before you all cry out about "well mine worked" It comes down to the level of imbalance left{spec allowed] when the tech ran it up for balance and how far he chased the "balance"

if you find the spec on an aftermarket part is better than an OE {and it usually is} then you are probably all good. but if it isnt...failure awaits. So....if its cheap....it wont be balanced that well as time costs money.
