Turbos???

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

T28 comes on the sr20 Silvias
T25 comes on the ca18 Silvias
16g comes on early evos (1-3)
20g comes on later evos (4-6)

I think, dont take me for gospel. I'm sure someone will correct me soon :D

So judging by that i'd say the 20g and the t28 would be around about the same. Just different flange pattern

20g turbo's do not come out on any evo's.. they are considered a slight upgrade..
as per original question: i'm guessing the 20g will be the biggest.

20g's came off Mitsu Canter trucks didn't they? Or were they the 25G's??

Anyway,

20g
16g
t28
t25

the t28 and 16g are very similar.

16g and t28 have similarly sized compressor wheels but the turbine wheel on the 16g is quite a bit larger than the t28.

Is upgrading to a 20g from 16g be worth while? Are the power gains worth the cost of replacing a good condition 16g turbo for a new 20g?

A 16g should see you about 170-220kw's at all four wheels with a healthy engine.

Depending on the modifications.

Dan G5R5OL was the highest output 16g I've seen, and that was pump fuel, stock internals bar cams.

A 20g gives you a fair bit more with added lag. I had a 23g and it made the car undrivable around corners. The boost would hit quite aggressively which made mid corner acceleration hard to control. This was a tdo5/tdo6 23g with a 070 housing.

Thanks baz

How much power was GSRSOLs beast making with the 16g? My guess is 220kw?

Do 20g's use the same comp housing as 16g and look stock from the outside?

How does a 23g compare to a 60-1? Were can a 23g be purchased? Or did you have yours custom made? How much larger is the comp housing?

I had standard cams with the 16g baz
in fact, most things were stock on that setup bar the injectors (EV0 9 560s), exhaust, E6 cooler and Walbro. That made 205 kw atw on Springy Motors Dyno, and ran 12.5 @ 115 mph (with a 2.1 60ft ).

Ive actually been thinking of reverting to that setup just for streetability... Big turbos on the street arent reaaaally worth it IMO. Fkn mint on the track though

Big turbos aren't really that great for circuit track work either IMO. I reckon if you've got a great street setup, then it's perfect for weekend circuit tracking too.

Drags would be another story I'm guessing.

The 20G isn't a HUGE step up from the 16G, but it's an improvement. To take advantage of it you really need more flow on the exhuast side by either a decent backcut on the TD05H turbine, or upgrading to a full TD06H turbine. The most I've seen from a 16G is 240kW atw from a mates Evo I that ran a best of 11.5 down the 1/4. I expect to make similar power with my 20G with 7 degree backcut on the TD05H turbine with no noticeable extra lag over a stock TD05H 16G.

I certainly don't consider ANY of the mentioned turbos to be "large" by any stretch of the imagination, and with a decent head setup and tune would be properly streetable and very responsive at the track.

Sweet thanks mate. Is there an actual genuine Mitsubishi 20g turbo or are they all modified 16g's? Were is a good place to purchase a high quality 20g? I know of GTpumps, but is there any place in melb?

Yes there are factory MHI 20G compressors out there. Not sure (as mentioned) if they're off some Mitsi Canters though - the compressor covers are quite vaulable from the Canter TD06s even as an upgrade for a 16G if you have a skilled machinist who can match the profile of a 16G compressor. (A larger compressor cover improves flow and increases response) This tells me that if a Canter TD06 cover can be machined out to suit a 16G, then it probably didn't have a larger 20G compressor in it and thus, the Canter doesn't have a 20G turbo. But it's possible that the Canters had a variety of turbo options.

My 20G is from GTPumps - bought online. I'm running a heavily modified Toyota CT26 cover.

The T25 and T28 you are talking about on the Silvias are of Nissan brand right?
or are they Garrett?

Confused.... ? because there are alot of T25 & T28 series of turbos available from Garrett..

would it help if the above turbos were rated in HP?

ultimately I am trying to get "a hold on" this to compare one of the above listed turbos against the one I am using (Garrett GT2871-15 - 460HP)

T25 came in 2 flavours.. T25 adn T25G from what I remember about them.. T25 off CA18 S13 and T25G of SR20 S13.
T28 came onto the S14 and above. The T28 off an S15 apparently is quite a good turbo.

16g came on early evos in 2 flavours.. small16g and big16g (There is a page dedicated to ID codes etc of these turbos on this forum, do the search)

The Evo4 + turbos are also 16g if i remember correctly. (Someone can correct me on this if required)

I had a big16g with back cut rear wheel and sierra front wheel (Slightly bigger than 20G) and on 18psi it put down around 200kw @ wheels. Tune was not the best either so definitely more in it.

Smutt - stick with the turbo you have. Also is it a .64 or .86 rear housing?

Take a look at these links, might help with more information, specs.

Was going to say, I think the earlier posts were confusing the t28 with the gt28. I believe the gt28 is similar to a 16g. From memory stock nissan turbo's are pretty small. I remember a guy with an r33 25t shocked at the size of the 14b lol.
