Ok, so I think I'm going to go down a size with my rims, but want to keep my current tyre width or go slightly wider.

Stock GTi rims are 16x6.5 and run 205/45 series rubber.

Currently I'm running 17x7.5 and 215/40 series rubber

Looking to run 16x7, can I still run a 215 but in a 45 profile? I don't want to go taller in the side wall than a stock 16" rim, but would like to get as much tread on the road as possible.

The current 215s I'm running on the 17 have just enough clearance on full lock and only rub on extreme bumps.

I'm thinking Tyres are going to be a lot more expensive with the 16s too due to the odd size..?

See what the offset is and messure to see what clearance ya have to ya guard lip, also ya strut/ suspension,
Are ya still fwd? See if ya can fit a wider 40 profile on

Most people will know how tyre sizing works, I only discovered it in the last couple of years, but for anyone who isnt 100% sure heres an eg.
245(a-) / 40(b-) r16(c-)
a- is width and c- is suitable rim size
b- is what i never really knew but I found out is the % of the tyre width,

Thanks guys, I'm clued up on the translation of the measurements, it's just a little tricky going down from a 17 to a 16 and ensuring tyre width is maintained, but I don't end up with 4WD looking rubber.

Considering whether for the price of decent 16inch tyres these days it's work sticking to a common size 17'.

I've got my eyes on a set of black Enkei RPF1s, and the 17's aren't that much more than the 16's, so i might be better off sticking with a 17.

So what are you asking then? Can you fit a half inch wider rim than stock with a 10mm wider tyre... id bloody hope so...lol
Or was it the 4wd tyre thing?? If ya know how sizing works... why didnt you work it out, lol
215/40= 86mm wall
215/45= 96.75mm
So...
or depending on ya wheel well/ suspension clearance, workout ya offset and where you can fit more rubber an try 235/40r16

Yeah offset is an entirely new beast for me, the wheels I'm looking at now have an offset of 43, not sure if that gives more or less guard clearance.

I was just more curious about the sidewall height increase on a 215/45/16 over a 205/45/16, but DOUGMO cleared that up.

Thats why I told you what the middle number is/ does, really didnt seem like you understood how the middle number translates, lol, all good anyway

Offsets how many mm the hub mounts from the centre of the wheel, 45 offset is 10 mm closer to the guard than a 35 for example

Isn't that backwards? If a 45 offset would have 20mm tyre clearance from the side wall to the inside edge of the guard ( for example), then a 35 offset would be 10mm closer to the guard I thought

Whoops yea man, I should have put the - in front,
"Offsets how many mm the hub mounts from the centre of the wheel, -45 offset is 10 mm closer to the guard than a -35 for example"

don't forget if you go a wider rim like say a 6" wide when stock is 5" and you keep the same ofset you are going equal parts towards the gaurd and the suspension

eg if you have 0 ofset ie hub mounting faceis in the centre of the rim and you step up from a 5 inch to a 6 inch wide rim you are going 1/2 and inch towards the guard and 1/2 an inch towards the suspension

Fitment guide states the offset for the GTi as 35-45, so if I were to go a 43 offset on a 7" wide rim (stock is 6.5"), then I'd still be well within the guards.

willtheyfit.com is a great site, very helpful.

I decided on the 16x7 Rota Slipstreams and will most likely stick with a 215 width in a 45 profile, as I don't want to run too much camber - being FWD I need as much tyre surface connecting with the road as possible.

If I can get a 225 on that would be awesome, but we'll just see.

Here is some wheel porn in the meantime, they are stupid lightweight...
