Very Lucky! *update strange noise* please read!

Hey guys,

The other day my VR4 developed a bit of an oil leak, which got worse by the day, so i booked it in asap to get fixed up.

Any who, whilst trying to find the leak, He stripped down the timming cover etc, and found the cause in no time, it was the seal off the oil pump.

Whilst trying to crack the nut off the pully he put another spanner on another pully, then put a bit off pressure on them, then SNAP... goes the the timming tensioner belt!..

How lucky am i that it didnt go snap when i was driving!!! we were both amazed..

Moral of the story, oil is bad anywhere but the engine. and dont prolong fixing that lil problem with your car otherwise it may end up costing you a shit load.!!

we've ended up replacing all the belts, timming blet & tensioner belt, oil pump seal and pully.

needs more swearing, beer and painful injures :)

apart from that, yes very lucky, the timing belts dont like oil on them at all :)
 
haha yer true.

update on the situation, had to buy a new timming belt tensioner pully, which costs 300+ bucks! farken hell :evil: No aftermarket companys make them, and i think mine is the first in history to leak.. haha. expensive times for me.
 
Not true, i've replaced one on each of my galant's so far and expect to have to do the current one shortly too!

I call it preventative maintenance
 
they may not list one for the vr4 aftermarket, but something
will be the same.

eg; evo2 same as hj galant sohc 4g63.

dont worry, genuine is good anyway.
 
haha shit, to late now anyway.

True Entaran, i'd rather do the little things now that have a stuffed engine like 5000ks later.

the 4 should be alright for another few thousand k's now!
 
Update.

Got car back today and to my horror, when taken above 3,000rpm had a horrible noise that comes out of it, very hard to explain kind of loud noise sounds kind of like the engine reving at a louder more stranger kind of way... What could of the machanic done to my car? Any one had this after replacing a timming belt + pullys??

P.S. still drives fine, sound comes on boost and off boost so thats eliminated the turbo..

My thoughts maybe balance shafts put in wrong?
 
Cam and crank seem to be lined up, but i think one of the shafts is out a bit, shakes a lil, sounds like a jets taking off in the driving seat :shock: haha. Getting it fixed up tomorrow!

This wouldn't do much damage would it?
 
If the oil pump balance shaft is 180 degrees out, it shouldn't really make any noise, there should just be a heap of vibration (unless the vibration is making things rattle which in turn is where the noise is coming from).
 
Apparently... The guys who had the engine apart before, put the balance shafts back in wrong, so when the machanic lined it up to the factory mark on the pully it was in the wrong place.. apparently there are 3 various ways the pully can go on.. so i guess he picked the wrong one!! haha.

Should get the car back tomorrow. Fingers Crossed.
 
I hope you trust your mechanic cause that sounds like BS to me. I don't have a motor in front of me to confirm it but I thought that there are dowel pins on the hubs that the sprockets go onto so that they can only go in one position :?
 
He is a fairly trustworthy bloke. although the poor guy has lukemia, and the sideeffects from the treatment can cause forgetfullness, maybe thats a factor, but he showed me oil pump pully, and it had one marking on there crossed out and a fresh one drawn on.. Hes fixing it for me and not charging me for it as you would expect, so to a certian extent i cant complain.

you'd think not, but mine did - not sure exactly what was making the noise, but it sounded horrible.
 
Well he doesnt know Mitsu's to well.
There is a 14mm bolt on the side of the block you are supposed to remove to ensure the balance shaft is correctly aligned.
