I have a couple of questions about swapping the viscious diff in my E1 to a factory lsd from an E2 or E3.

1. do the centres swap easily? Or do you need to swap the housing as well?
2. can you use the same driveshafts?
3. are the E1-2 ratios the same as the E3? ie so you have to be careful to buy the right one.
4. is it just easier and cheaper to buy an aftermarket centre? Or do you still need to swap the driveshafts?
5. are the mechanical diff rear driveshafts rare? Or is that just the front ones?
6. how much benefit would it be to the car (given that its done about 100k kms and may be worn anyway)?

Thanks!

i assume your talking about rear...

1. Yes, strip the diff, unbolt the centre fromthe crown wheel and swap.
2. no, you need RS shafts, but they are just the same as the standard GSR open diff shafts
3. ratios stay the same, your not touching the CW&P, just swapping over the centres
4. Aftermarket will give a performance advantage (and increased locking and noise etc, but yes still need RS/ open diff shafts
5. I dont think they are rare, they are just the same as GSR
6. the mech diff gives a good performance advantage, especially over a worn viscous one, that said its a big rougher to drive with, that said mine is set very tight. I think the performance will really depend on what the car is used for, and other mods etc.

Thanks mate. Appreciate the comprehensive comments!

Can you clarify point 2 as on reading it, to me it seems contradictory.

2. He means that you can use normal GSR Lancer open diff rear shafts in the EVO mech LSD centre. Or obviously, you can also use EVO I RS rear shafts, or EVO II-III RS or GSR rear shafts.

Cheers. Thought so, but before I started looking, wanted to make sure!

Do any of the E4-6 RS diffs work?

is the crownwheel different on the back like it is on the front? as in the hole is bigger for a viscous?

Yes. Later model EVO 4-8 RS (non AYC) rear mech LSD's will fit and work in the EVO I-III and GSR Lancer rear diff housing.

with mechanicals they are, but a viscous in the front has a larger hole in the crownwheel, my question is if that is also the case for the rear?

Is it worth all the hassle of swapping....there was is a complete rear LSD diff for sale on ebay.

Buy that ...sell yours.....ask same guy for shafts.
