G'day all.

thinking of swapping an automatic drivetrain to the VR-4.

could any one give me a complete list of parts needed?

Auto box - RVR?

6bolt auto flex plate from which car?

pedal box - RVR/ magna?

auto transfer case - RVR or from an Auto VR4 (will have to import)

TCU - RVR/ magna?

rear diff - RVR?

drive shafts?
prop shaft.

All you need.

Auto pedals (brake and throttle), gear lever, cluster, tcu, engine loom, shifter cable. Gearbox and engine mounts (they are different in auto), axels (not sure on this for awd), transfer case, rear diff, flex plate from 6 bolt dsm (1G), torque convertor, crank spigot bush and lastly patients to do the swap....

The alternatives, no tcu and get a shift box and use an aftermarket ratchet shifter.

This will save time on wiring.

thank you Baz,

guess i'll have to get most parts from an RVR ?

why do i need the engine loom? auto tcu Loom isn't enough?

Galant gsr or se fwd interior parts plus loom.

The TCU loom is tied into the engine loom on the autos. You will need to either do the full loom or manually split.

Also, if you want the dash to work with all the auto lights then you will also need the dash loom.. unfortunately, my manual to auto conversion consisted of mainly electrical. Tracing, wiring, etc. Little things like the starter motor wiring (so it starts only in p or n). Also reverse light switch (manual on box, auto off shift lever).

Lots of subtle changes that require rewiring.

It really depends on if you want to do it properly or just for the auto. You could go basic and only auto and no TCU.

Hardware, you will need mounts off the RVR ?? I used magna mounts. Engine plate off RVR. Don't forget trans oil cooler also, you will need one of those with a fan. If I don't run mine with a fan it goes into limp mode due to heat.

Shifter cables I reckon are better off a magna ? My galant gsr shifter cables exited the gsr galant differently to the manual galant . They came out of the tail shaft tunnel instead of thr firewall ..

Using an RVR box in mine I only needed the trans mount changed to the RVR one. The roll stoppers were fine.
I run a galant shifter and cable routed through the firewall where the manual ones used to run. I just made up a new cover plate to suit.
Reverse light switch is on the box on the RVR auto as well.
I use a shift box on mine but with the increased line pressure downshifts are VERY harsh! I'm thinking of wiring in a tcu for the street.
You will need the front passenger axle and hanger to suit an auto as the offset is different.

If you want softer shifts without the tcu complications, you can simply put switch to the pressure solenoid on the box. This way, you can go shiftbox mode (hard) or soft mode (ecu PWM signal). You can even map the ecu to output pending rpm /speed/tps.

I believe 0% Duty will give you softer shifts. 100% harder...

Thanks to both of you but this isn't going to happen

The car i was going to buy and do the auto swap has been sold :(

So I'll just have to be content with my manual VR4 for now
