Hi Gents,

Im going to be pulling my engine out of my galant in the next month or so and transplant it into another shell but whilest i have the engine out i want to have the gearbox rebuilt.
My gearbox grinds sometimes when i put it into second gear so i think the synchro's might be worn, can anyone recomend someone in perth to rebuild my gearbox?

Also what sort of HP can these gearbox's handle?

Thanks.

The main cause why 2nd gear crunches is mainly because of a combination of worn synchros and worn or chipped hub/slider teeth.
Nearly every gearbox I've pulled down the teeth on the 1st/2nd gear hub and slider were chipped, broken or burred badly causing difficulty shifting into 2nd gear.
The keys and springs in the hub also get worn and loose causing sloppy shifts. In all my rebuilds I use double springs on the 2nd gear side for a better shift.
When you think about it, 2nd gear is the most used gear out of all of them, plus its also the most punished gear from people launching and mis-shifting from 1st into 2nd.

As far as horsepower is concerned, the weakest link in our gearboxes is the cross-shaft and spider gears in the AWD centre diff. When you start launching with sticky tyres or making around 300kw atw you're at a good risk of breaking the centre diff. The next weakest link is the 4th gear. Its only small and pretty weak. The teeth can strip on the dyno under load or whilst having some fun when making around the same sort of power figure or not much more. Sure there are the exceptions that haven't broken theirs yet, but on average 98 pump fuel and 250kw atw is a safe bet for a street car. For 300kw+ start putting money aside for a rainy day to beef up your transmission either with a 4 spider centre diff or a welded centre diff. Im sure there will be some guys who have broken theirs with less power or more power, but the general consensus is 300kw atw is the magical figure.

Have a chat to Brad Mike. He has a guy across from his work that he uses for his g/boxes. He did tell me his name, but forgot.

What EVO-00X is pretty spot on ! Likewise 99% of VR4 gearboxes I've stripped down have very worn dogs on the 1st/2nd slider hub, and worn synchros. The majority of 2nd gear dogs are also heavily worn as a consequence of forcing the shift after the synchros wear.. I dont root around any more.. new slider hub and synchros, and if need be another 2nd gear ( although I've almost run out of good 2nd hand 2nd gears !!)
