vr4 intercooler kit

Help Support 4GTuner:

the whole point of buying a kit is so you don't have to get it custom made isn't it?

it works out to about AU$1275 on your doorstep, 2 days after you order it.

the coolers are made by that company aswell and tested in house.

dont forget about import taxes.. u wont get it in 2 days. it will get held up in customs and you will be issued custom import fee's...

seriously for $1200 you can get soo much better.. its your money tho!!!
why dont u get together with a mate who can cut/weld etc.. and do the piping yourself? theres maybe $200 worth of piping in that kit.. if that.

Jon

i forgot about the import taxes thing

are you sure it applies to that though? i got a flywheel from the USA without any trouble.

i'm waiting on my dump pipe from the USA now aswell.

the other option i'm thinking of is the Meek kit with a 600x300x76 cooler, or using my current cooler and making friends with someone who can do piping.

depends if the person who you bought it off declared officially how much it is worth.. if its worth more then $250USD it will get taxed.

some exhaust joints do piping or even try Darren at Trikfab.. but ur car will be out of action for afew weeks.. he isnt the fastest worker.. but he does do a good job... touch pricey too but u get what u pay for!

Got an email from Chris last night, Meek kits wont be in stock until November, I'm just going to wait for them

Comes to $795 delivered for:
Piping kit + Throttle Body Elbow + Turbo Outlet + TB Gasket + Postage

So I'll still need to get silicon hose and clamps

that works out to be around the same price as that kit from america which included an intercooler!.. silicon, clamps and silicon bends will set you back around $150 odd.

Theres still $300 difference.

The kit on ebay uses Mild steel (im assuming because they seem to tip toe around the material used, and if it was stainless, they'd mention it, like they did for the clamps)
and this: This kit will require cutting of the bumper support

The meek kit is aluminium

the one on ebay is a very nice looking kit, but i dont like the idea of using mild steel at all

not many kits dont require cutting of the front bumper or something like that.. when you use a bigger cooler and bigger piping ofcourse you need to cut things.. its not like a 100% bolt on mod.. hardly many things like this are cos the cars can vary from car to car. you will probably need to spend about 1/2 a day fitting it i reckon.. as the jspec front bars do require some cutting and the lower part of the bar may too.. also the removal of the bracket on the passengers side of the radiator etc..

what i was saying was:

Meek kit $795
Hoses + clamps ~$150
Total $950

So the kit in the usa is $1250 which includes and intercooler..

Anyways on materials used.. i guess its the end users choice.. on my car i have mild steel.. i see no problems with it and it doesnt seen to be a restriction.. so im happy with it.. all in all just cost me under $600 to do the kit (hoses/silicon/clamps etc) on my car including the intercooler ;)

I would be embarassed if I was trying to sell mild steel cooler piping kits for those prices. There is so much wrong with using mild steel, that I don't know where to start.
With the Ebay kit you will probably have to pay the GST, wich will bring it closer to the $1400 mark.
Thats twice what its really worth IMO.

You dont have to pay tax on anything less than $1000 AUD worth of goods, but its the luck of the draw, I had $3k worth of stuff come right through no worries.

jon, the $795 price comes with the sillicone and clamps i believe.

mr gears... whats so wrong about mild steel with cooler piping?

Material used is always at the owners discretion.

Nothing too serious....just that it will rust, it's heavy and does not dissapate heat as well as alloy.

Mild steel pipe is good for exhaust pipes on the old bluebird, but I would't have it under the bonnet of a car that I am proud of.

Oh and all those welds that you grind off when you piece together bits of mandrel bends so that it looks good on the outside...makes it flow worse on the inside. If you can get the good continuos mandrel alloy pipes, then anything else is second best.

But all that aside, the difference in performance between two well designed piping sets, one alloy and the other mild steel would only be marginal.

would only be marginal

at 200psi.....

the extra weight... id be more worried about that big meal i just ate effecting the overall performance/ fuel economy of a car, if the added weight of a meter n a half of pipe was of great consern... are you ?

and the rusting... maybe in 10 years it MIGHT start to rust... i didnt see any rust on the inside of the paper thin mass produced 16 yr old pipes i pulled off the vr4...

not saying alloy isnt the best, cos it is. An unessesary expence tho.
