Assisted a friend in solving his no go engine drama. It had all the symptoms of a faulty CAS. On investigating, we found this in the loom... It was spliced between the regular CAS and its plug. It has a genuine Mitsubishi part number... Removing it from the loom and directly plugging in the regular plugg cured the no go, and all runs well now. I've never seen anything like this. ! Its a genuine E38A pre facelift VR4 RS. Cheers Mike

not a listing at all ,

Ive even gone through the caps system via E37A, E38A, E39A , with no luck

its most likley part of that factory loom ,

is it possible to get the Jap vin emailed to me at [email protected]

Thanks
Travis

What's inside it? Is it a relay? Maybe there to change the signal from the CAS to the ECU? I'm entrigued, let me know what you find!

My guess would be some form of signal filter maybe??? Electronics inside probably went faulty and it no longer passed signal to ecu.

Drop by David, and we will cut it open. Not really sure that the nice square wave CAS output signal needs conditioning ? Maybe its the Jap version of the infamous Brock "energy polarizer" from back in the eighties !

Measure the resistance across the pins.
Maybe it is some sort of interceptor or pull up resistor box?

Strange!

I reckon its some sort of device to amplify the pulses from the OEM CAS to the ECU. Or, used to convert the pulses to another way in which the ECU that was being used at the time could interpret it better.
Perhaps they had a lot of electrical interference in the wiring loom and the CAS signals to the ECU were weak and/or were interferred with. This would have mucked up the signals to the ECU and caused gremlins in the timing of the spark and fuel injectors.

David ( dafurn) dropped by and painstakingly cut it open. It was certainly potted very well !! I then soaked it in acetone overnight to dissolve the difficult bits of gunk. It has a circuit board, a chip with no lettering, a couple of capacitors and a series of resistors. I will post up a photo when we clean it up a bit more. It looks very much like a serial port comm port cable I made up years ago ... The Ecu is just a regular dual board set up.. Still scratching my head. Even my Japanese Mitsubishi parts man is stumped ie the part number " doesnt exist"

The E part number starts off with the first few letters and numbers of the Engine Control Relay or MPI depending on your slant.

Actually doing an internet search its damn close to it fir DSM's but obciously not a conventional looking MPI in a gold metal casing.

Update.... I soaked the board in solvent to dissolve all the potting glue. This is what it looks like.. photos attached

its a noise reduction filter , which can make the car run very average it not conected and its a part used in the USA alot more

one of the techs at Knox Mitsubishi has been with mitsubishi for 20 years and has worked in the USA and the UK also

Runs way better with out it  Obviously something failed internally, and the VR4 wouldnt run at all ! I wonder what made this VR4 different to all the others that dont have the suppression filter ??
