Hi guys, Im mucking around with getting a speed signal into my ecu ( Haltech Elite 1500) i am currently using a single channel hall effect sensor off the tailshaft bolts, this isnt ideal and is very hit an miss. ideally i am looking to use a hall effect pickup at the factory speedo drive. Now i want to retain the factory speedo ( im using a Racepak IQ3 as well so i can verify speed input is correct). Does anyone know what size our speedo cable drive thread is? I am looking at using something like this just so we are on the same page and VDO list gm/chrysley and ford but nothing else.

The vr4 has a vss signal at the back of dash. Its driven by a reed switch on the cluster, iirc. That may suit you.

The newer mitsi have no speedo cable, they have a vss on the gearbox to drive a electronic speedo. This could bolt into your gearbox.

Yeah ive already tried the reed switch that didn't work. So far ive tried 3 different dashes all the same result. Any idea what speedo drives might fit? I was originally looking for a pass through hall effect sensor so that i can retain the speedo cable for cruise control

I was thinking abs sensor, but they are inductive too.
I think you will need a 3 wire sensor.
Jaycar sell sensors, you will need to mount and make chopper wheel though.
could use a sensor from a rvr cas or cps, mount it and custom chopper wheel on driveshaft flange at centre bearing.

Im using something very similar now to pick up the tailshaft bolts on the pinion, there isnt enough resolution with only 4 pick up points, i was looking at deleting the abs so i might look into that. it doesnt have to be hall effect, it can be reluctor, i have found the tend to be a bit more prone to noise. Ideally I need a solid VSS input to the ecu for boost control.

You should be able to just rob the signal from the abs. If it faults the abs then you maybe can use the abs signal to trigger a ssr to give you 12v square wave (or 5v if thats what you need)
A ssr like this may do you

depending on you abs voltages. With its low current draw it shouldnt affect abs signal. But im not a guru with this stuff.

Ce lancer/mirage has speed sensor on gearbox ^ no cable.
I've seen the electronic speedo drives bolted straight onto W5M33 gearboxes a few times. I also assumed they were CE model drives. I might have one here in the garage, I'll have a look and get back to you.

31 tooth electronic unit. Same distance from o-ring etc as W5m33 gearboxes. I pulled this one from an Evo 3 gearbox. This one has 31 teeth but Im sure you can adjust the speed pulses on an aftermarket ecu. I will get you the tooth count numbers for GSR, Evo 1-3 soon.
The metal housing drive in the pic has 29 teeth.

So to use this with e6 ecu in early Evo.....how would one go about it Rob?
Considering the early Evo doesnt have the plug for that drive in the loom.

The gear is removable/interchangeable isnt it?
Not in the electronic one I don't think. In the normal GSR/EVO 1-3 cable driven speedos the gear just slides out. But that electronic one appears its made differently and the gear does not slide out. It could have a circlip or something on it, but I assume it to be different and I haven't pulled it apart - not that I would want to unless I had a spare one to sacrifice lol.

evo-gsr, I've never ran one of these but it should work just like normal electronic speedo's do, with a pulse. You will need an aftermarket ECU to run it I guess as the factory speedos are mechanically run by cable.

It's good to note that the electronic speedo gear tooth count is 31... which is exactly the same as GSR Lancer 1.8 4G93T and Galant GVR4 for the 3.545 rear diff ratio (58 tooth front diff crownwheel) :) . So you would use this electronic one as a replacement for a GSR/GVR4 speedo drive if you had an aftermarket electronic speedo gauge or ECU that accepts the signal.

if it has 3 pins, it will need +5v, sensor earth, and the last wire is the vss to the ecu.
i would think the ecu and ce speedo share the vss signal. So you might be able to remove the eletronic speedo and mount it in the cc dash. I wouldnt think the ecu modifies the signal and sends it on to the dash on a different wire

So what car is this electronic VSS out of? I will try and hunt one down, I will lose my cruise control for the time being but it is a nicer way than what i have setup currently.
