WATER PUMP

Help Support 4GTuner:

get good coolant, might aswell change the belts whilst ur there, and if u haven't done your timing belt recently do that as well, coz u gotta strip it down the the belt, other than that nothin much to it, make sure u use good gasket sealant.

if you have never done the belts (timing and balance) or cant remember when they were done id recommend to do them as the timing belt has to come off to do the water pump. while your there u might aswell spend another $50 and do the cam seals, crank seal and balance seal. that way you wont need to take the covers off again for atleast 80,000k's.

i would suggest to buy some gasket goo (lil orange tube) and use a bit of that on the new waterpump gasket to get a perfect seal. obviously make sure you clean off the old gasket form the block thouroughly. and if your not 110% confident on doing the timing belt dont even take it off. make sure u have the the crank at TDC BEFORE removing the timing belt.

Scraping the original paper gasket off is not much fun when the motor is in the car, have a can of gasket remover handy as it makes it alot easier.

If you do take the timing belt off and the hydraulic tensioner has not yet been replaced, please do so even if it looks ok (remember, most of these cars are now 15 years old or more).

I prefer to use "aviation gasket" for waterpumps as you don't have to wait as long before you can refill the coolant system.

that has every single thing you need to know. basically, spin the engine over untill the crank mark is at the "T" and make sure the cams marks are facing eachother on the inside. when you put the belt on ensure you dont move any of the pullies and youll be fine. take it on exaclty how it came off and your laughing.

but i cant stress enough, if your not 100% confident to mess with timing belts. so much damage can be caused with such a little mistake.

sorry guys, hey you know how ur water pump has a pipe that runs along the front of the engine underneth the exhaust manifold?? how do u disconect it?? Is there a thread on VFAQ i can refer to? Coz i can't find it? any feed back greatly appreciated :D

you don't. just pull the waterpump off and the pipe stays there. There is an o ring on the pipe which you should replace and lube up when you put the new water pump on.
