Welding body panel?

Does anyone on here do welding of body panel? This is to replace the dented panel on the rear quarter with a new one, and as such needs to be welded on.

If know one on here does this, do you guys have any recommendations of good plus cheap welders/panel beaters?

I reccomend you get someone good to do it. I say this because it can ened up in tears if not done properly, you can't really paint on the back side weld of the panel, and inevitablly, it will rust, the problem will be a million times worse though if done by an innexperienced person.

It is however, one of the better ways to go about repairing the rear quarter, good luck with it, pick your panel man carefully.

I have removed the interior panel so I can reach some of the places to push it out.

Seriously just find one local to you. Small independently owned shops are the way to go. Please don't try it yourself if you've really got no idea what you're doing. It's not a four year apprenticeship for nothing to become a beater. I've seen too many of these jobs at work: guy thinks he can fix car, guy fucks car, guy comes into work wanting it done right, guy gets slapped with larger price because it'll take more time to fix now that he's fucked it! I read it on here all the time, but just remember that more often than not a cheap job is a shit job. Especially with having a new panel put on, it's well worth paying a decent price to have it done right. That way you know it's done right, with time spent. And that way it's safe, won't rust up on you, peel paint, fall off, or burst into flames.



PS. there's a bit more to it than smack and fill, damn it.

I'd leave it alone Richard and let the professionals do all of it. If you take them a job that you've started, then they have that as a fallback if they give you back a car which is not repaired to your satisfaction ("Well, sorry mate, but the damage you'd done trying to fix it just made it too difficult to get right - we tried out best, but HEY")

I'd ring up a few Hot-Rodding places who build custom Deuce Coupes and such for people and talk to those guys. The blokes from work who are into building those sort of old cars etc can do some amazing welding with oxy torches (less harsh on thin body panels than mig or tig), so I'd suggest giving them a call and seeing if they could take a look at your car and suggesting what could be done.

I say thats repairable, but not without effort. Some might just say replace rear 1/4 - if you do go for repair, try to assess their skill and 'care factor', you don't want someone that is give it a few whacks and bogs it up.
Assume the boot floor is sound and not creased? I'm guessing it should be ok but worth a check.
