Hi all,
the engine and gearbox is out of the car with the head removed. so tonight I thought we will get the gearbox assembly off the motor.
nuh it has other ideas!!

all the bolts are removed from the bell housing and it can be moved out about 15-20mm but thats it.

have I not done something that is stopping it comming off? do these use a spigot bearing in the crank?

please help if you can?

cheers

Hey Brian,

Have you removed the transfer case? Starter motor?

Did you remove the clip that holds the thrust washer and clutch fork together? Maybe its catching on the flywheel?

Its actually easier to pull the gearbox off while the engine is still in the car as you can 'wobble' it off, but since both are already out of the car that doesn't really help :-/

transfer case still attatched it looks like it should come off with it on but this the first time ive done one so correct me if Im wrong

Hey Brian,

Yeah unbolt the transfer as I am fairly certain that the transfer sits high enough to touch the back of the flywheel, hence you only getting 15-20mm of movement before getting stuck. I think you will need about 30-40mm to get the input shaft out of the flywheel.

Its only a few bolts to get the transfer off, and its easy to remove/re-install.

Hope this helps,

Mimmo

make sure you get the extra bolt around undert the starter that goes in the other direction (from block side into the bellhousing). it's like 10mm and tiny.

its a 12mm and it screws into the engine block locator. also make sure you take off the bolt (12mm) that holds the inspection plate from the engine to the gearbox.

You will need the transfer case off, I had the same issue when buying my motor off a guy who thought it would be easy, there was about 5 bolts he had missed as well as not taking the transfer case off, It's been a while but I think also the clutch pivot arm had to be disconected so the fork could release as it is pulled away (if that makes sence)

eventually came free.....the input shaft where it goes through the clutch plate looks like it was rusted and stuck.....

mongrel job.... that should have taken no time at all

cheers
