The ATO website says most of us will start receiving our payments via bank deposits from 6th April (this Monday). I suppose the people who get it first will be those who had their tax return deposited into their bank account last financial year.

Where does it say that? I'm still unsure if i even qualilfy?

Deano you are right in saying that uni students and those receiving government assistance will be first to be given the money, then evryone else who is eligible will receive it in order that last years tax return was lodged.
The Mrs was early lodging her tax so will get the money in the first issue, I only did my return last week so will have to wait an extra month to receive it.
The payments will be made by direct deposit if the ATO have your current bank details, otherwise a cheque will be mailed.

To be eligible-

Am I eligible?

Your eligibility and the amount you are paid will be based on your individual 2007-08 tax return.
You are eligible to receive the payment if:
  • your 2007-08 taxable income does not exceed $100,000
  • your adjusted tax liability for 2007-08 is greater than zero (that is, you paid tax)
  • you lodge your 2007-08 tax return by 30 June 2009 or by the deferred date granted to you by the Tax Office, and
  • you were an Australian resident for tax purposes during the 2007-08 financial year.
Unless you have been granted a deferred lodgment date by the Tax Office prior to 18 February 2009, you must lodge your 2007-08 tax return by 30 June 2009.

This could Suck, I have recently changed banks so my account details will need to be changed, I hope they are able to figure this out and mail me a cheque...

I'd be on the phone to them asap if I were you :)
Definitely.
also something to note,
if you lodge your return with an accountant, they may have extensions in place, whereby if you lodge your return late, you will still receive the bonus later on.

Fucking a-holes in government!

So the amount you receive is based on your salary, that sucks. It should be based on your living arrangements IMO.

Scenario #1:
* Guy earning less than $80K, so gets full $900
* Living at home with mum and dad.
* No expenses (rent, bills, food)
* Contributes nothing to local infrastructure (no rates on house, no payments to water, elec, gas companies etc)
* Spends money on toys and going out
Or
* Saves it (defeats purpose of getting it - go out and SPEND SPEND SPEND)
* So really, gets more money ($900) on top of his <$80K salary which just sits there accumulating.

Scenario #2:
* Guy earning $90<$100K (higher tax bracket too), gets what, $200??
* Living in own house on their own
* Paying off a mortage, has bills, has to shop for food
* Pays rates, pays for gas, water, elec (ie supports local infrastructure)
* Uses money to buy furniture for house or other things (do the repairs that have been needing to get done for a while)
*Is not really getting as much benefit of their take home salary than guy earning <$80K (who has no real expenses) but still gets shafted by $700 by the government.

So why should guy in Scenario #1 get more $$$ than guy in Scenario #2!?!?!?!?

you the the government have all our living arrangements on their database in depth, no.
they have our bank accounts and our salary
who wants to investigate 12 million peoples living arangement? fuck that

Does a single person earning 90-100k need another $900? I mean shit, I get just over 30k a year (before tax), I would love to buy/live in my own house, but sif I got any sort of chance. I would think you could live quite happily off 90k a year.

All I do is try and save a bit (if theres anything) while I can.

Scenario 1 is staying at home because...
A. He cant afford the luxury to buy a house.
B. Im sure he's paying some sort of rent/food/bills (Unless hes italian?)
C. Has to sacrifice some privacy (gg no loud girls over?)
D. Is probably trying to save as much $$ as they can before buying a home.
E. Wouldnt have the luxury of a big budget to get a shiny new car or tv.
F. Their car is probably their biggest asset

Scenario 2
A. Complains about scenario 1 guy because he gets more cash handout
B. Complains because he has to pay ongoing money/maintance to own a house
C. Complains stating well scenario 1 dude should have a better education to get more $$.

So, in both scenario's you weigh up the pro's/con's and make a choice.

Just think of it as a bonus (whatever you get) and also think how much further in debt labor has made us. I'd just be grateful and thats it. This argument is like children whinging imo. Funny that, you get taught when your young "stick and stone might break my bones but words will never hurt you", and you get on with it, but when you mature, if someone says shit, people want to sue your ass. :S

If they really wanted to stimulate the economy, instead of sending out cheque, send out special vouchers/cards that can only be used in Aust stores to buy goods/products, that way it gets spent, not stored (like a gift card). I do also get your point though, if its suppose to stimulate the entire population using tax paid by everyone, it would be fair to recieve the same amount, but I think Labor wants to focus on giving something to the needy/poor rather than the comfortable people. I'm sure it would mean alot more to those who arnt able to afford the luxury items (or even xmas/bday presents) than those living comfortably, then again, does anyone generally need this handout at all?

If they really wanted to stimulate the economy, they'd produce a package that had a multiplier far greater than what the current package includes.

This most likely means you won't receive "free money" (which it isn't anyway), but you will be more likely to have a job in a years time.

Fat chance of that though..
