Had my first track day in a car this weekend,

It was just a winton funday, and for my hard earned $30, it could not have been a better day.

I've been to many motorbike trackdays, and they are not even close to comparable, this was amazing, and if I'm honest, at 4:30 when I was considering the drive home, I was surprised that my car would take that much of a beating, and still cruise home down the hwy.

Having never been before, I had a rather large learning curve ahead of me. The street, and the track, are like two polar opposites. To even think that you have any familiarity with the way your car handles from driving on the street, you too will learn a lot.

The day was run with 2 sessions per hour, all day from 10am, through till 5pm. no stopping for lunch. (well briefly) the only time there wasn't people on the track was for incidents, like a couple of blown engines (and oil on the track) and an accident that saw a less fortunate honda slide sideways into the ripple strip and fold his rear wheel under the car :( this would be a costly mistake for a street driven daily .... glad I wasn't being too hektic, or got caught up in the adrenalin.

I took it easy for the morning, just learning the car, feeling the breaks, and realising that once heat gets into the tyres (595 RS-R's) they seem to feel like someone has applied glue, rather then the sliding feeling when your too hot into a corner. For the life of me, I couldn't get the car into a power oversteer, it was a little understeerie, but it wasn't excessive, I was able to hit apex's pretty well.. (well probably means slow)

One massive thing I learnt was, there are so many ways around winton, just taking a couple of laps to realise that there is so much track between the curb on the left, and the curb on the right, just taking different lines, massively affects how you get come out of a turn, and get into the next.

I did a bit of a hero move on a VL turbo, that was wheelspining out of the first hairpin in the cleavage, I was on the inside, and could hold a tighter line, but went wide into the next hairpin and had to make it stick in order not to look like a tosser, and completely stuffed up my entry into the third turn, but with the 4wd and turbo, the car had me out of there was soon as I was straight enough for grip, and I had enough power to keep him in the mirrors.

Not sure I'm a full addict, but I'm definitely going back, and I'm definitely going to spend more time on the track.. I'm still a little worried about my car, as it is kinda of a daily, and I don't want to commit to a full track setup.... time will tell on this front, but can't wait to get back to the track again.

Fantastic Nick! Two thumbs up from me - one for giving it a go  and one because I reckon you've recognised and nailed the most important aspect of track work - it's nothing like driving on the street

You have taken your first step into a highly addictive and enjoyable world.... welcome to the dark side!!

Am really glad to hear you had a great day and were able to not only enjoy your car, but bring it back home in one piece. That's my definition of a successful track day.

You don't need to go the full track spec to enjoy your set of wheels on the race-track - just make sure you have plenty of brakes left, plenty of fluids, fuel and oil and that you do a basic maintainence check over everything each time you get into the pits.

Drive to the best of your abilities and confidence and you'll enjoy yourself more and more each time you get out there. Keep the limits of yourself and your car in mind and you will rarely get into any serious trouble that would result in a bender....

How did mel like the day nick? shame i missed it cos i had a slipping clutch :( oh wells always next time! Just out of curiousity what is a decent time around Winton? low 140s?

Jon

low 40s is going pretty well

mid to high 30s is quite swift and a goal that is a bit harder to manage than you first might think

anything under a 35 is FAST.

the evo 8 I drove for evo nats I did a 1:38 with 190kws (tarmac rally car) in 40+ heat(pushing hard).
The silvia(pig-stripped street car-no special tricks or mods at all, just thrown together) from work I also did a 1:38 in a few weeks ago(220+kw) and it was suprisingly easy and had more left in it.
Goes to show every car is very different when hitting the track

one thing that is cheap and makes a car alot better for track is a wheel alignment, often over looked but very important.(even more important than tyres to start with)
the 1st things I would reccomend for track are good pads and fluid, no brakes is no fun when your flying down the straight and get to the end and the pedal goes to the floor(happened to me @ winton and its not fun)

Thanks George! Yer im looking forward to my first track day hopefully sometime this year!!!

I go to Craig at Trackside.. im sure he can set up my car up when its time to booooooogie!

It sounds like the track is just as addictive as the quarter mile! hehehhe

Jon

trust me jon, track is muuuuch more fun than 1/4 mile. the only down side is it can make a fast car feel a bit slow on the straight until you come to the next corner anyway.

I used to run at the tarmac dragway in tassie, now I wish I had spent more time @ symmonds plains

you finally did it nick. good on ya mate.

much better than doing the bullshit mountain runs.. and much safer imo.

got an alignment on thursday, fitted hks strut tops and dialed in 1.5 neg

i think it could have used more, but it was my first time out..
i have a real good mate who manages a tireshop, and my car has spent a lot of time there "dialing in" it's good to see the difference, and he always lets me help and learn.. which is ace.

i think i'll go coilovers before to long, as some more caster and camber should curb the entry-mid corner.

Again, can't wait to do it again, i'm thinking i'd like to go to baskerville in tassie, and if there is a track day down there, i'll catch a boat.

baskerville reminds me of broadford

basky is a mad little track, I too am keen to get my evo there.

from my experience get as much castor on there as you can, helps turn in and
doesnt increase tyre wear on the road, win win.
I have over 5 deg castor and still run 3.2 neg camber but with my new control arms should be able to run more castor again.

do you know what toes etc.. you are running?

awsome write up , makes you want to go for a run, it would be unreal if we could all get together for a deca or winton day

did you get any times?

any more pics? the car looks right at home there

basket looks like a good track, i went there in like 2005/06 i think. It was the "first time" they held trials for fulllock motorsport drift show... lol it was a good laugh watching VS utes drifting around basket :)

Winton fun days are awesome fun and value for money.
Ive been to 4 of them now in my gsr
On the one that was on 13/12/2009 I actually proposed to my now fiance flat out down the main straight. Haha wanted to do it a different way than down on one knee:thumbsup:

Added a couple more pics, also i was black flaged in the second session, cause i forgot to close my bonnet, (they let me out tho) anyway, i had it open between the session to check on things and let it cool, must have forgot to close it.

remember.. close bonnet!

you were just to excited to get back out there Nick

I got flagged at Sandown as my brakes where on fire, but still drove it home and then back the next day with new pads , my misses was in the car we were both in fits of laughter
