Hey fellas, as some of you know my car has been scheduled to be on the dyno (for the last 2 weeks lol)

I got a phone call from Amberley auto this morning and they seem to be having some issues with pinging when they start to add some ignition timing, even at 1 bar of boost.

They're going over the car looking for some possible causes while I write this post, Rob asked me if the head had been ripped off or not since ive owned it, because apparently excessive planing of the head can raise the compression of the engine........

It hasnt, well, not since Ive owned it.

A compression check came up fine, with 150 across the board, which i'm happy with, but even after draining the fuel thats been in it for 5 weeks and replacing it, its still pinging- hard.

any ideas or thoughts?

cheers,

dre

whats base timing?
autronic correct?

bad batch of fuel
not enough fuel???
what inj / fuel pump you got again? and fpr?

what afr are they trying to tune at?

what intercooler do you have?

Not too sure on the first 2 questions baz, i've had very limited contact with these guys since the car has been with them, majorly due to a big arguement with one of the owners/managers (Ian), he's on holiday atm, and spoke to rob vickery today, he's who I would have wanted to deal with from the start.

I hope that they (Trikfab) didnt screw anything up when they did the cams and timing belt, as the balance shaft was 180 degrees wrong which i was told is an easy mistake, especially if your not familiar with these engines (bloody aussies)

The fuel has been replaced, the old fuel has been sitting there for 5 weeks, that was the first thing they replaced, but hasnt done anything.

Apparently the AFR's are fine, no problem there but its still not liking any advance in timing, and pinging its balls off, even at 1 bar. :x

I brought up the subject of injectors with him (PTE 880cc) and explain they could possibly have a different spray pattern or something (talon, eclipse 2g) but he said it was unlikely but would check it anyway.

Fuel pump is a Whinebro 255, fpr is sard.

I/C is EVO 6.

im scratching my head as much as what they are......... perhaps too much back pressure? blocked exhaust?

modified cars for you huh!

While im at it, heres a complete run down on specs.

Jap spec 131k kms,

3" off turbo
Walbro 255l/hr pump, SARD FPR, PTE 880cc squirters
EVO III cams, OBX cam gears
EVO VI I/C
2.5" I/C plumbing to XF throttle body, intake manny port matched
Garrett GT30R .63 A/R zorst side
Tial 38mm 'gate to atmosphere
OBX stainless zorst manny
Autronic SM2 ECU

water injection (not hooked up yet)
boost controlled by SM2

ive probably forgotten a few things- ive been drinking

who installed the cams?
maybe get it checked

were they properley lined up?

everything sounds good

what power is it making at the moment without much advance in timing?

also are both cam gears set on 0 / 0? (no adjustment.. stock setting)

by the way dre, how are they detecting knock?

knock sensor of some sort?? (knock link?)
super mic + headphones??
nothing but ears??

just make sure that if its a knock sensor of some sort.. verify that it could be your lifters (noisy and could cause harmonics in the engine which the knock sensor could easily think is knock)

if knock link, i believe the sensitivity should be set in minimum (not 100% sure though)

ears.. pfffffft. tell them to do a proper job and use a device of some sort

super mic.. then you have a problem.. if they are using this and hearing knock.. something has to be wrong..

hey dre, can you post some pics of your engine bay for me..
haven't seen it in ages!!!
lemme see the new piping!

They'd better be using something, they're supposed to be up there in terms of performance workshops, check out some of the customers cars on their site.

I aint got no pics baz, which ones I had when it was in pieces I threw away, the plumbing is still kinda ugly, I wasnt (and still arent) sure what I'm going to do with it, powder coat or polish, but at the moment I'm not really thinking about it too much- I JUST WANNA GET THE FUCKING THING BACK!

ITS DOING MY FUCKING HEAD IN

lol, easy dre.

but yeah, ive always got a million things going through my head when the guy rings me up saying "we've got a problem", I automatically go into 'think the worst' mode and forget to ask questions like how much power it made on 1bar etc.

I just hope to god its ready before the end of the week, surely a workshop of this calibre and sort the problems out and sort it soon, it makes you wonder how many hours they are putting into it each day, this is the 7th week its been in there, its the neverendingfuckingstory.

Hopefully i'll have some good news tomorrow for ya's

later,

dre

yeap, it sucks huh

thats why i do most things myself. admittedly though, building an engine is something i couldnt do.. but bolt ons and stuff.. at least you know the job is being done properly when you do it ;)

".. at least you know the job is being done properly when you do it"
lol

when i do things like this, i'll usually have the car in bits for weeks, cos i cbf finishing what i started...like da other day, i started puttin da system in, its been 3 days, and i really cannot be fucked finishing it
lol

but i know where ur comming from ;)

i know what you mean

a word of advice.. if they always seem to busy to talk to you
call em.. book in 1 hour of their time.. pay for it... ask em anything..
this is the only way to get those 'headless chickens for mechanics' to talk..

they are the worst to deal with... i'd only take my car to someone i can talk to ....

but like i said.. i've had my car tuned by a guy who is well know and is meant to be AWESOME!!.. he tuned it by ear... made me less power
and i ran the same 1/4 mile at a perfect air fuel ratio compared to a 10:1 air fuel ratio

the base timing was changed by the new tuner.. i thought he knew what he was doing.. i guess not..

i took it bak and he advanced timing and it improved greatly.. but i gave up and threw it in for a rebuild

anyways dre.. good things come to those who wait

not to fond of Amberley Autos. Found they dont give u the time of day unless ur spending big $$$$. Had some issues with my car, went there and paid about $350 for them to tell me they dont know and didnt fix anything.

I'm certainly not going back there again.

They made me feel like small fry, still, paying throught the roof for them to take their sweet time.

so far- 7 weeks and 2 days to do:

Fit/tune Autronic SM2 ECU
water and oil lines for turbo
intake pipe
battery in boot
fit 5 defi BF gauges

a few hickups along the way and $4700 later.

I was originally quoted:

"Hi Andre,

To fit & tune your SM2 you would be $1200.00inc GST

Install Defi gauges - $220.00inc GST plus any parts required"

somehow those few other things have cost me an extra $3000 which doesnt seem right, i'm going to have to sort it out with them when i go see them, hopefully tomorrow

maybe with parts mean - with your full engine rebuild..

the customer is always right
take it bak
and show them the quote
threaten them..

you have to let them know your doing them a favour by letting them do the work..

if they're good about it... negotiate i guess.. but they sound like dicks

Ive already had a massive fight with Ian, it turned into the "i'm about to tell you to come pick your fucking car up"

because i was complaining about how long it was taking.

i feel like theyve been giving me the run around big time.

bloody aussies

you should have said
"i fucking will"

man.. if they talk to a customer like that.. how do they get business?

should make it official not to go for us vr4 boys.

yes, but at the time, I didnt want to

a)pay for another $72.50 tow truck

b)have it sitting for another 2 weeks before someone can finish it off

c)have to bother with any more amateur workshops.

this has put me off modifying another mitsi in australia for good.

I already know what my next car is going to be, and its not from japan, its just not worth it, I should have listened to myself from the start

Don't be put off Dre...

Whats the next car you got in mind.....its a Falcon isn't it....an XD Falcon.....bahahahahahahahaha.....I can see it now. 351 cleveland, C4 tranny, 9 inch rearend, chrome 12 slot wheels..... :p
