Did an oil change on the gti yesterday and when I cranked it over the oil filter flew off and spewed oil all over the garage floor.
I realised that when trying to screw the filter back on it would hit a point and keep spinning indicating an issue with the thread. So I bought a new Ryco filter today and test fitted and and its doing the same thing.
Tried the old used filter and it screws on fine.
I notice the new Z411 has a number 20 punched into the top which my old filter doesn't and the thread hole looks slightly larger.
I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue? I have a feeling there may be a bad batch of Z411s going around.
Thought it was worth giving everyone a heads up anyway.

I've heard horror stories about coopers. They might be fine, but I've just got a phobia about them and not keen on using one.
Where my filter is located I can fit a longer filter but can't fit anything wider.

Use it merely to check if the thread is not fucked on your housing is what I was suggesting.

Ah right, I see your point. Well the old filter that I took off (also a 411) screws on fine and tightens up, so I'm confident the thread is fine. It's just these new filters that seem to be a different spec.

Very wierd, even the Ryco website says it uses the M20-x1.5-6H thread, same as the Z142A

So its definately the correct thread pitch, is it a GSR engine or Proton? if GSR did you remove the water cooler and throw a different stub shaft in it??

Whats the old filter part number??

It's a GSR engine, but I'm running a filter re-locator kit which runs the factory thread size and have run three Z411 filters since setting this up.

I sent a note to Ryco via their website asking if the specs of the z411s has changed recently. I received a call back within 5 minutes asking that I send all of the filters in and clearly mark what the issue is as they are concerned it may be a defect, apparently specs have not changed.

I'll see what the outcome is and let you guys know.

Yeah, apparently the Z345 is the same but slightly longer. I'd ideally just like to stick with the Z411 (my other car also runs this filter).

It's just strange that the one that I took off to replace originally fits no problem, but the new ones won't tighten up, they just over spin.

Free oil filters for a year for the active members on here!

Consider it done.

I've actually worked it out for myself, feel stupid for not noticing it before but also don't feel so dumb because it wasn't all in my head that these weren't screwing on properly.

The top plates have been pressed on upside down. :S

I'm still posting them back to Ryco to sort out.

Pics will be up soon for everyone's reference in case you come across the same problem.

Well to be honest I've never really notcied the 20 stamped on the face before.

Looking at it now, it may just be a new design, because there are more holes in the new filters, as well as a different shaped outer ring.

New is on the left (this is the one that blew off), old is on the right (this still screws on fine)
