Its simple to do actually. I went through 3 cans of cheap degreaser whilst scrubbing it down with an old toothbrush to get most of the loose crap off it. After I hosed that off I brushed on some Chemtech Blitz Alluminium Cleaner, let it soak for 10 minutes then hosed it off. It looks like it doesnt do much when you brush it on but believe me, when you hose it off the results are amazing! Its the best stuff Ive used for cleaning alloy and removing oxidisation from alloy so far. The 1 litre bottle has lasted me ages too -worth every cent! This is it here: http://www.chemtech.net.au/page36.html and http://www.chemtech....efits NOV09.pdf . That gearbox only got one rinse with the Chemtech when I took the pics.
A second rinse will get all the marks and oxidisation fully stripped off the alloy and ready for polishing or painting without too much trouble. Sometimes the alloy will go a dull grey, sometimes it will stay shiny, either way a little bit of Autosol or similar polish once dry polishes the alloy right up

I didnt waste my time on the bellhousing because its damaged and going to get replaced.
Bellhousing is degreased only, back half of box is degreased and Chemtech washed.
Degreasing does not get rid of the oxidisation and the surface is still rough and scaley. The Chemtech finish however has removed 90%+ oxidisation leaving a cleaner and smoother surface!
When the box is fully apart I'll retreat the casings a 2nd time with the Chemtech and polish the bitch up
PS: Mik-e, possession is 9/10ths of the law. If you left it at my house it's mine mutherfkr lol I was wondering where I got it from... thanks it's good shit!

Apart from bearing separators I'm going to need a press. I found that SCA are selling a 6000kg press for only $99 ($50 off sale til next weekend). I think I'll grab one of these because Ive still got more work to do on the transmission (press new bearings on) and then some more transmission work to do in future. It obviously isnt going to be the best press on the market but for simple non industrial use like transmission parts the 6T will do the job just fine

Thick walled alloy tube, deep impact sockets, even the top section from a centre diff work on various bearings
You will need a gear splitter though Rob.
Just need to make 100% sure that you are pressing on the correct section of the bearing.

How much time do you spend in a parking lot with your performance car? If you do a lot of parking lot driving, and hang out in parking lots, chances are you are a ricer, go home and read import tuner. If you’re complaining about noise you should not be modifying your car. You should also consider no longer being a man, please hand in your genitals at the door.

UPDATE:
I had everything ready to start the detailing work this weekend but my friend returned my air compressor to me without the attachments!
I'll be using one of TZ's unbreakable coss-shafts instead of the modified OEM unit pictured.
I thought there was a difference between the GSR & EVO cross-shafts at first, however, I spoke to Dirk in NZ who has built a number of these gearboxes and he assured me me that they all have the same part number and that the difference is the forging thickness variation. ie If the forging is thicker it will get machined on the sides, if not the cutter will just pass over it. He said he has several cross-shafts from GSR's and EVO's and picks the thickest ones to have machined for his gearbox rebuilds, regardless of what they came out of.

Wow, a year went by fast since getting the car engineered and rego'd last year on 10th August.
I am only on the 4th tank of fuel and only done 1600kms in one year lol
Still trying to find the time and $$ to get the new gearbox sorted.
Will update when this has happened

Mik-e is driving his coupe to Sydney for emissions testing this Monday so I decided to take the day off work and bring my coupe along for the drive (considering Hitman tuners is not far from the emissions testing facility).
Also the Mrs let me use some $$ to book it in for a road tune to cheer me up (cant organise a dyno that quick unfortunately).
Will be awesome to finally ditch the 4000rpm rev limiter and run-in tune to get some damn boost into the little beast
