10w60 for the engine sounds a little on the thick side?

Depends on how Rob built the motor.

Mine will also be on the thick side (20-60) whereas the AMG will be around 10-30

What diff oil did you use?
LSD specific one?
or just plain old diff oil?

As Dougmo said, lsd friction modifier if you have used non LSD oil. Just put in a bit at a time though until the noise goes away. If you put in too much, the diff will slip more than it should.

KAAZ / REDLINE / MITSU have them.

It's a Castrol fully synthetic LSD diff oil, can't recall the specs off the top of my head atm.

90/140 for the transfer to imo rob. thats what I was recomended when I got it rebuilt.

Are you sure he said 90 GL5 for the transfer case too George? or 90 for the rear diff?

I currently have about 2 litres of Castrol LSX-90 GL5 low friction extreme pressure oil in the garage which specifically says its for differentials. Thats whats currently in the open rear diff of the coupe but Im getting bearing whine. I dont know if its because the diff bearings are shit or because of the fluid as I havent driven the car as an AWD until after the oil change. Now that I've got the mech rear LSD I'm going to have to change fluids when I change the diff over to EVO mech anyhow. If I can use the LSX-90 then it saves me buying the SAF-XA 80/140. :)

Our motors were built with a 20w-50 recommendation. They're an old style motor and I was thinking 0w-40 or 5w-30 is going to be a bit thin IMO. I dont want to be topping it up all the time and losing a lot of vapourised oil out the rocker cover and getting sucked back into my intake system (or lost out the breather for some people). Will see how it goes.

I noticed when I first got my engine up and running with 30 grade mineral I lost a fair bit witihn the first 100km (due to blow-by past the rings as they havent bed in yet). I've since dropped the oil and filter after 100km and put a new filter and oil in it. The oil level is now stable at 200km + :) I have a fair while to go before I hit the 1000km mark before using synthetic oil so will have to plan a trip somewhere to clock up the km lol

i forgot to get it, i have a bottle spare at home

edit;found my invoice

part# is MB664682 I think it is 100ml(could be 200ml) bottle and i used about 75% of the bottle.

i just got a litre of diff oil and premixed it with the modifier before i filled the diff so i didnt over fill it.

Are you crazy? George was talking about LSX-90 for the rear diff + Mitsubishi friction modifier, not to be put into the gearbox :w00t: You can put LSX-90 into the transfer case though.

Hey mike, why did you go 10w-60? isnt that abit too thick?

Mitsu recommends 10w-30 for turbo 4g63s (or 20w-40 in warmer ambient temp environments).

I sure castrol edge 5w30

EDIT: Just read previous posts... makes sense now!

My rear mech lsd diff has now been fully serviced and given the OK for pick up today :w00t: Hopefully I can put it in before the end of the week to see if it sorts out the whining noise coming from the rear end at about 100kmh :)

I got an early Fathers Day present in the mail as well. This thing is polished and pretty and quality stuff from JMF. Its definitely replacing the stock black plastic piece of crap!

Thanks guys, it looks very nice on, but very hard to take pics of as its polished and comes out black in photos B)

After driving for around 300km or so I have finally ditched the noisy GSR open rear diff and got the EVO mech LSD from NZ checked and serviced, then installed into another GSR rear diff housing using GSR 3.545 crownwheel and pinion :) The tooth alignment and backlash was set, bearings checked and reassembled. The humming noise I was experiencing with the old GSR diff at around 100kmh is now gone = wooohooo! When the old GSR diff was removed the bearings were rooted and you can feel them sticking when turning it by hand so it was good to finally diagnose the cause of the humming noise (a sigh of relief). :)

Thanks to Mik-e, Frank-e and Gabe for installing it for me and changing all fluids the day before my wedding as I was a bit sick and couldnt work on the car myself.

Oh, a funny but cool thing happened the other night. Frank-e was sitting in the drivers seat of my coupe in the garage with my older brother and his Mrs standing out the back having a bit of a listen to the exhaust note. Frankie decided to give it a bit of a rev and a loud 'bang-bang bang' was heard as the coupe was shooting foot-long flames out the exhaust at the current 4,000rpm rev limiter. It scared the absolute fuk out of them

Ive clocked up 495km in the coupe now... :w00t:
