different width rims an issue?
#1
Posted 18 March 2009 - 09:21 AM
80% on 8" rims (235/45), 30% on the 7" rims (215/45)
will there be issues at all?

one wheel can be 10 inches wide and the other 6 but if they both have 45's then it only take the same distance for them both to do one full revolution regardless of diameter.
what he has wrote they are both the same rolling diameter

hey, wouldnt it be ok having diffferent widths, all you need to keep the same it the rotating diameter, nothing to do with width in it..

the profile changes with the tyre width.....
say..... 205/45 to 225/45 have a close rotating distance a difference you will never notice
but when you hit 235/45 you will notice.... your best off to go 235/40 to match a 225/45 rolling diameter
etc....

input your specs to that and note the rolling diameter is 18mm different, giving you nearly 60mm difference in circumference.
205/45 and 225/40 is pretty close (4mm dia) - the vcu should cope with this amount of difference without complaint.

I heard it a million times.
All you have to do is ensure the same tyre is fitted to each wheel, and it will be fine.
I had 17x8 and 17x9, with a 225/40/17 on all rims.

I ran different width wheels for over 18 months on my VR4, dont listen to people when they say you cant do it.

yes listen to this man... he has lot of experience..

mate go for it, my cuz has similar on his vr4 and it is fine
it will be wrecking his viscous unit in the box, making it get hot and it may fail due to the extra load.
im not saying the car wont drive with those rims but it will stuff it in the long run.
the problem isnt so much the rims but the odd tyre sizes.

If they are not engineered then running different rim widths & tyres front & rear will be illegal in Australia if they didn't come that way from the factory and if you bend it your insurance claim can be refused and you may have to pay for the other cars repairs as well as yours Pays to check with the relevant authorities before you do any mod
yes tru but then again, going from a stock 15" wheel to 18"s are illegal too....
S12-S15 + skylines etc all came factory stock with 16" and 15"..... insurance seems to cover them when they go staggered sizes... kinda unfair rule really..

The Qld modifications guide doesn't restrict the wheel diameter BUT specifies that the overall TYRE diameter must be within +15 mm or -26mm and the widest tyre can only be 1.3 times the manufactures widest optional tyreyes tru but then again, going from a stock 15" wheel to 18"s are illegal too....

JAP63 seems to think there isnt a problem and from wat ive read, in every thread about width and offsets, he seems to know his shit
Yes, I've heard he has exquisite taste in shit. (sorry Jamie, couldn't resist).
I'm in the "keep it the same on all 4" camp. It means you can rotate tyres around to extend their life, only need to carry one spare, and certainly a lot less stress on the vcu (which most of you guys wouldn't even know if it had crapped itself until you took it on dirt anyway).

Yeah, cant argue with that, all the same width and size is the go, however, the amount that a tyre sidewall stretches over 1 inch of difference in width is bugger all. In fact i rekon it wouldnt even cause a VCU or driveline issue. Thats just my opinion, others probably wont agree. If it were really that critical and sensitive, then different tyre wear on different wheels would see diffs blowing up...

Dead right, You've obviously looked this up, i looked the other day..usually the rolling diameter is ok with most upgrades, but people forget about track increase. To be honest, you'd be very unlucky and hard pressed to be pinged for track increase. A cop, or RTA inspector usually wont ask you the offset of your wheels, then the standard track of the vehicle and do the math on the side of the road. However, bear in mind, if the car went for inspection, they could remove a rim, verify and confirm the offset for themselves and then ping you for it. By this time, your generally F*cked anyway, and your car is in impound.
But with the track thing, if its not stupid like zero offset and 10-12 inches wide, they generally dont even look, otherwise just about every GTR and the like would be copping fines everywhere.
When i was once pulled over, the cop asked how wide the wheels were (rears), i said 8, they were actually 9, He wasnt gonna stand there and spend 20 minutes pulling a rim of to confirm this, and this was a State Traffic Task Force guy, one of the worst...Having said that, he pinged me for rolling diameter...but it was 10mm over. My point is, they do know their stuff,at times, but with the track increase, i couldnt see many ppl getting done.
