There was also that guy in New Zealand that converted his RS Vr4 to RWD.

Not sure if you mean me or not - mines not an RS, but was rwd for a couple of years.
There are a number of other rwd vr4's and evo's here though.

In my experience axles tend to break before diffs. Everyone who drifts nissans breaks stuff though...

With my 170kW there's the same power going through the t-case and rear end as a 340kW 4wd car - they don't tend to break stuff too often (3 bolt axles aside).

If you wish to build a pro drift car that's competitive (300+kW @ wheels), go north south with a proper gearbox (not a production one) and something like a turbo GTO rear end.

If you just want to have abit of fun, and improve your car control, whip those front shafts out!

So the evo 1/2/3 rear ends i know its a hypothetical, but if you just ran it RWD what sort of power would it be able to cope with?? and what sort of improvements can be made to help in this situation??

This was my reasoning as well.

the biggest misconception about drifting is about grip. grip is exactly what you want. its really the alinement and front end setup that people change, they are just trying to make it more controlable while sideways. if the whole point was less grip no one would run big rear tyres would they. and as for nissan gear there is nothing great thats makes them drift, yes they have some features that lends them better, but nissans also do many things to get more lock, lock spacers being the easiest, many are cutting and shutting hubs and control arms, i deal with it everyday.

really, if you look at it properly at an engineering angle, chassis rigidity is big, alinement and lock also. and the obvious strength issues. evos should handle more than the vr4 with there diff setup.

oh and if anyone needs a gto rear end, let me know.

haha yeh that would be me, i've had it for about a year now, have rebuilt or replaced almost everything on the car - drifting wasn't too kind to it, it's awd again now, been doing plenty of events in it - hillclimbs, mallala, motorkhana & even a bit of dirt stuff, it's an awesome car!

Hello just googled this and found it , sorry to bring this old thread back up but i have some input on this too :)

Do you still have the evo in rwd mode?

Having my evo 3 the past 7 yrs and gone though various and a LOT of modifycations the car was ment for ultimate grip and Hill Climb events..
When the past year season ended and got a taste of drifting in my mates S15
It all started though a simulation game that i play Live for speed which it tought me HOW to drift a real car ( believe it or not)

so anyway i got my car into rwd in matter of 30 minutes as been said.
Two main problem with the evo being RWD
I broke 2 rear diff casings only ... The diff is fine but the 3 bolt setup and alumium back casing doesnt stand, But ok the problem with the rear casing breaking was moslty of running very short ratio gearbox and fucked up bushes..
Now the car is though some more improvements and will be back on the road in a week or too
The other problem is as been said again the steering lock... im in the process now hoping to find a proper way to do more lock on it.. didnt decide yet what to doo as my option are very limit cause of lack of cash
Any input on steering lock mods would be appriciated too :)
At least i have a plus on this matter cause the car is been converted to wide body and this helps me have space for more lock.. stock bodies of earlies have no room what so ever
the car is max around 500hp but only run it a 1 bar of boost for drifting...

here are some pics in action
