I have a friends VR4 right now.. Big 16g, exhaust, filter, 15psi, bigger pump. right now, just under a 1/4 tank left, 390km. and that is heavy traffic driving with a good few squirts.

I had the exact same problem, got 240-250km to a tank. Checked all of the above, nothing. Turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator.

i found that the coolant temp sensor was reading -159 degrees so i swapped the wires around on the plug and i got the correct reading but thats still not the problem:fuuuuu: probably half of it though i ended up getting 146k to one tank and its blowing black smoke on idle, im pretty confident it is the o2 sensor because it has been cut and resoldered and when disconnected it didnt make a difference so ill give one of them a try

Chuck a data logger on if you are able to...helped me diagnose my o2 sensor straight away.

I had a check engine light which would appear every so often for a short ammount of time and then would disappear. Apparently it only shows under certain circumstances but theres an explanation for it on the www.vfaq.com faq section. My issue was a bit different though as my fuel economy was normal but the car kept hesitating.
I used TMO logger which has a fault tab from memory and it said that the 02 sensor was faulty.

Hello,
I have been slowly getting there with a vr4 on fuel economy.
When I brought it (all highway driving) I got ~200km per tank. This is what I found.
ECU had blown caps, fixed added ~100kms per tank
I then upgraded to a 055, 560cc, 20G and a meek chip. About ~50km per tank extra. I think the meek chip was the cause.
Swapped over O2 sensor, added about ~50km per tank
POD filter adapter / POD Swapped to a decent pod / adapter and gained ~50 km per tank The main reason about the pod filters is that the airflow has to be straight though to AFM. Mine was terrable.
Just put a new walbro and reg without much change.
So now I get around 450kms per 50-55ltr tank which is still really bad.
My lancer with a rebuilt 4g63t 20psi awd gets 450-500 on a 40Ltr tank! I have a plx 500 wideband / narrowband in it and I allways wonder if that is the cause of the added kms. Or the rebuild? The AFR's on cruise is 14.3-14.7 (a bit lean). under load 11.3-11.7.
Thanks,
Glen

update
givin it a regular hiding got 300 to i think about 38ltrs.
evo 3 turbo, 650 injectors, walbro pump, hks cams, cyclone intake, 20psi, keydiver chip.
am happy with that as it is heavy car compared to a lancer or most other small 2lt cars.

I once drove from ballarat to adelaide in a basically stock jspec vr4 (11psi, no other mods) and hit the fuel light as I got to the lights at the bottom of the hills there.
That's 664km from my door... or like... 7.8L/100km.
It never happened again. On the way home I was doing like 200kmh...
