No hassles at all. Just came in with a statuatory declaration from the cops (as I didn't have a receipt or proof of purchase of the engine) and the vicroad worker checked my engine number and gave me a new rego sticker!

1 of the cops start asking me about the car. "Whats with the wide wheels, is the car modified, etc"
if it goes to an inspection station they would most likely pull up the papers for the model car, so make sure your wheels and tyres compile
He then proceeded to asking me to pop the bonnet, and he starts scoping around. Found my turbosmart boost controller and atmo BOV.
revert to plumb back bov
He says boost controllers are illegal, even though I have a switch to turn it on/off in the cabin. True?

But he said I will be getting a letter from the EPA in regards to my BOV and boost controller
Whats this about and what does it involve???
Not sure on VIC testing but In NSW they do strap your car down to a infloor dyno for emmissions testing and the staff drive your car following a set speeds on a monitor to generate different loads, This also included a sound DB meter to measure the volume of exhaust at X number of meters at 45 degrees to the car.my test took half hour from start to finish.
In my case had to take it to a EPA inspection station where they took photo's of the car and checked that it was all back to stock, logged the pictures in my file and the Emmissions station pulled that file and pics up and checked off that first then on the rollers it went.
the out come will all depend on who ever is doing the testing how they are feeling that day as some have bad reports and some fly through easy breezy.
Also take into account that any cop when running your plates weather they have pulled you over or not will have incar access to the photo's of your engine bay and the emissions reports and anything else that this head ache causes you will be at their finger tips to look at.

So it seems like I'm just getting my exhaust & emissions checked.

Your lucky an epa notice in nsw and its time to reconsider owning a modded car - Ive seen skylines returned to stock and still not pass, the emission ruling is per original compliance check/test , most importers only get the one car checked for compliance then bring stock in on the proviso they are the same as the original tested car . even the local manufacturers only ever get the one car tested !!

Once pulled over i stuck with my story of i only hit 60 quickly but never sped and after abit of debating and the usual check with out opening bonnet told me on my way and goes no way you were doing 60. He even pointed out that i had bald tyres and blowing smoke.
I just nodded and said ok.

So about 2 months later I've finally cleared this ridiculous EPA.
1st of all, all noise testing places test our cars with vr4/early evo engines at 4875 rpm. Which is WRONG because the ADR regarding testing vehicle noise levels states that the RPM at which the vehicle is tested at is 3/4 of the peak power rpm (ie in the vr4 engine case, its 149kw@6000rpm; so testing speed is 6000 x 0.75 = 4500rpm).
I've tried explaining this to the monkeys numerous times but they just do what the 'book' says and for some strange reason it tells them to test our cars at 4875rpm.
The difference is not much, but can help you clear those couple dB needed to pass a test.
There are 2 types of EPA notices;
1) Noise. This is the easy one. All you have to do is get a certificate from a qualified exhaust shop stating your car is under the maximum noise level (90dB including backoff noise).
More or less, the exhaust needs to be completely stock. The more restrictive the better. I had an OEM exhaust with a jasma muffler, and even that didn't pass!
2) The notice with the lot; Noise & emissions. If you get this one, you have a choice of only 2 places to go to (1 in Werribee and 1 in Moorabin).
Your car must be clear of any EPA unfriendly modifications (a list of what you can and cant have is outlined here: http://snipurl.com/ujzvf ). Basically the car must be stock!
An emissions test is conducted, so a quality catalytic converter is a must. They also check for oil leaks and will ping you for even the slightest leak.
After that the noise test as above in (1) is conducted.
Overall this was a very unexciting experience and wasted my time nicely.

my mate got dicked the other nite by pettit in bayswater.. good to know.. how hard was it to pass?... like how many goes do you get at it? can you still drive your car around to get stuff done if it fails the first time?
