RWD GSR ???

Verry much into my drifting and grip. for quite sometime ive been considering weather or not to build a drift car up or to buy a gsr and do an 4g63 conversion, then thoughts came into my mind is it possible and if so what is need to make a gsr into rear wheel drive? ive done some searching but no real results. at this point of time just playing around with the idea but would definatly be something cool.

iv seen this done in a couple of ways (in vr4s and evos I assume gsr would work just as well)
the first (and easiest) is to pull the front shafts and weld the centre diff shut (and usually the rear diff for drifting) this is obviously pretty hard on rear diffs but as long as ur power levels aren't too crazy and your not running too sticky a tire it could last :D

the second is to turn the engine north south with custom mounts and build a rwd driveline to suit (series 6 RX7 or possibly R33 skyline?) obviously this is very expensive and time consuming.

For drifting personally id recommend grabbing an S13 or even R33 as theyre available very cheap now and modification is cheap and easy :D

either way have fun drifting's the most fun you can have haha

haha actually Rallying wins for the most fun!.. its the best of both worlds.. + big jumps, mud, day/night, antilag & bigger jumps...

the problem with trying to drift an evo/gsr etc is that they dont have enough steering lock, you dont need alot of lock in a 4wd, but soon as you remove the drive from the front diff then your in trouble. That and your putting power

It definatly would be cool, but un-competitive and with the price of S13's etc and they easy availibility of aftermarket parts etc you would be crazy to try anything else..

thanks for the responces guys. yeh well if i was to build up a drift car my starting block would be an r31 with an rb20 conversion. then over time build a strong s14. yeh i guess ur just never going to have the reliability with a car thats meant to be 4wd but converted to rwd, and steering lock definatly is an issue.

The biggest issue with a drift car is panel availability. You -will- hit walls.

Also, rallying is by far the most fun and biggest adrenaline hit.

would you say rallying is more expensive than drifting tho?
and risk of smacking ones car into a tree on the side of a rally stage would be higher than kissing a wall in a race track/off street drift establishment?

+ wear and tear and general breaking stuff ??

+ entry fees into events

would think rally would cost WAY more than drift

Whats the point of ruining a gsr/evo, when one of its main features IS rwd.

Reminds me of the guy who purchased Dinos (Pashn8) and wreckd it going rwd.

-Drift may be slightly cheaper, but it depends on what your trying to achieve i would think the top level state and national drift guys are spending close to what the rally guys are. You cant compare doing a drift day in your street car to doing the ARC in a full spec Evo .

-Rallying probbaly involves more maintaince, but then you are getting alot more Kms for your $$$, ie the average length of a state round is 100km+ competitive. Drift tyres are a bit cheaper, but they would use a bucket load more than you would use rally tyres

- Rally entry fees are probbaly more but as above you get more Kms for your $$

- there may be more things to hit on a stage, but least there isnt the 'other car' factor, i would think its all about how hard your pushing. I'd say chances of panel damage is about equal, chances of completely writing your car off is higher in rallying (but that adds to the excitiment!)

- probbaly less chances of destroying big dollar engines in rally


It may be cheaper to do a season of the G1 drift comp, but 3 rounds over the same 1000m of race track just doesnt do it for me.

hey man, I converted my E1rs into a drift car no problems. All the little dramas like steering lock can be fixed with a good alignment and some relatively cheap modifications like steering rack spacers and good bolt on wheel spacers. The upshot with the earlier evos is the weight is so minimal. I'm only running 140 Kw @13 psi on a standard engine. That amount of power is more than enough i feel. I mean in it's current form I'm not going to win Drift Australia, but its fun as hell, it's not another s13 on the track. And at the end of the day when it comes time to sell up, it's 1 hrs work to convert back to AWD.

why turn it RWD when trying to drift it AWD would be more of a challange
