how much power you making on this beast mate??I was just wondering if anyone has priced a dog box for there gsr before, I'm still running the g93 engine not sure if there trans are the same as evo etc, but yer was just curious if anyone has priced one up and through who...
i wouldnt waste my cash on a dog box unless you were making 350-400awkw unless you want to do awd heli's lol??
if you bought the gear set (1st - 4th) and took it to a gearbox place to get fitted i say you could get it done for less than 10k, but then you would need to do the transfer case at least too.... i did some rough pricing for the whole drivetrain not long ago and it was like 25k haha

Adrian, the US boys thoroughly believe you can get some good use out of W5M33 OEM parts for up to 600hp if built with the right upgraded components where it counts (some OEM internals just cant handle it). Take a look at Shep Trans http://www.sheptrans...ons/dsm_awd.htm specs. There’s a lot of DSM’s in the 8’s and 9’s running these boxes. Other places you can look up are Jacks Transmissions and Team Rip (TRE).

Ugrading that to a 4spider centre (like SHEPTRANS do) will have your box good for 400hp (so they claim).

That gets you input and intermediate shafts, with all the gears, a billet c/diff housing, an a billet selector for 3rd/4th. Everthing else you use in the box is standard components.
Its an awesome box, Its the best change we ever made to the Evo.. and i firmly belive that a dog box is a must in any competition car.. no so much for the strength (which is a nice bit of insurance), but more the driveability for things like positive gear selection, left foot braking & when your chasing that extra second clutchless shifting..
PPG as a company are fantstic, they sponsored us last year and were really great to work with....

the first thing to fail in any awd car, including the wm33 box is the piss-weak centre diff.
Ugrading that to a 4spider centre (like SHEPTRANS do) will have your box good for 400hp (so they claim).
Meh! I have 2 VR4 w5m33 boxes with perfect centre diffs and smashed 1st gears.
1st gear in these boxes suck to launch
And the claim for a 4 spider centre diff is actually 600hp
I've welded the centre in one of my boxes to try it out at the strip.

How much time do you spend in a parking lot with your performance car? If you do a lot of parking lot driving, and hang out in parking lots, chances are you are a ricer, go home and read import tuner. If you’re complaining about noise you should not be modifying your car. You should also consider no longer being a man, please hand in your genitals at the door.

I've just killed mine and is now in the market for something stronger.
Those US boxes do look tempting (cheap!!).
But I'd really love to have a PPG box.
What is the deal in maintaining them?
Is it streetable?
I was considering the albins stuff, so they are no good?

other things to think about, you will need a new clutch as the spline on the input shaft is based on an evo 6 input shaft (10mm larger than Evo 1-3/VR4), this may mean that the gearbox case needs milling out to accept the larger shaft. Also there is some variations in the detent spacing on the selector rails between each version of the gearbox, get it wrong and the dogs wont engage propperly and it will go bang.... I'd suggest spending the money to have PPG's expert box builder Brian build it for you (its around $900 but they charge a flat fee to assemble) ..
Albins make a 1st-5th helical cut dogbox for VR4 - Evo 3, its about $5500, however it includes a lot of non standard parts, like bearings and seals etc, that only albins can supply. I know there stuff used to have a bit of an average track record with the rally guys, and i have heard a few bad stories however i do belive they have improved some what. Personally id think the PPG box is worth the extra cash.
