I have been having this problem today while i'm driving, the check engine light and cat converter light comes on then engine hesitates while diving. It comes on every now and then..I can hear the relay clicking below the ecu. I'm really worrying again as this might be another problem, any ideas what's wrong with it??? Vr4 88 jspec with single board ecu.

I would suggest pulling the ecu out and opening it up and checking for any leaking capacitors, also check for any wires not plugged in properly.

also get a logger and read the engine code relating to the light

check the fault code/s - can be done without a logger also.
88 j-specs had dual board ecu's btw. if it's a single it must be late 89 or later.

ive been having the same problem as mico, but it was only happening on a certain hill as i went up it. I had steve knight check it out and the fault code said it was the o2 sensor so i replaced it and its still been happening intermittently... aspec 90 with jspec engine, ecu...

I cant see how an 02 sensor would make your car cut out?
Someone correct me if i'm wrong but all an 02 sensor does is tell the ECU a basic AFR whilst on cruise or idle??

sorry, I wasn't clear:rolleyes:
mine was only the check engine light coming on whilst driving...didn't noticeably effect engine performance, just increased fuel consumption and error code said it was for O2 sensor...

Pulled out the ecu today and replaced it with the old one (jspec dual board), good thing i kept it as a spare. Check engine light and cat converter light is not coming on anymore but lost a bit of power cause the single board ecu that i bought from razza has a chip on it.
I opened the ecu and I didn't notice any leaking caps from the top view but i will still get it replaced when my dad comes back from sydney on sunday. It's only those 3 capacitors that needs replacing right? Has anyone replaced theirs with higher voltage?
