hey everyone.

im currently looking at/for a CC GSR with a 63 in it as a daily, and ive read somewhere along the line that they can crack firewalls.

i was just after a heads up as to where in particular to look because i dont really wana buy something where i can see the engine while im driving

cheers

they will crack along the top edge of the fire wall about 3-4 inches in from the inner guard skirt under the bonnet seal. They will usually crack vertically.

I thought the clutch master firewall crack was the most common one ....

if a 4G63 conversion has been done well it will have some sort of reinforcement in that area.

has anyone got pics? so many places? Have never checked mine
though I do have a tower brace and clutch /brake brace in there!

If you have a look to the left of the windscreen wiper motor, under the rubber strip that seals the back of the bonnet, you may see something along the lines of this.....:(

The Evos have bracing along and around this section from the factory, which GSR's do not have......
If you do a search on "bracing" you might find the thread which covers this topic, I remember reading it a while back, which has pics of some of the bracing:thumbsup::thumbsup:

so what actually causes that? just stress thru upgrading power? or is it a design fault?

damb I'll go and check mine!

under the rubber hey?

sneeky little bugger!

from what i can gather its a combo of a lot things. like hard launches over and over, very low and stiff suspension. rough roads amoungst other things, the evos didnt get it as they had extra bracing around the strut tops and fire walls. Its the little things like that the evos got and gsr's didnt that make all the difference i think.

Its a combo of stiff suspension, hard launches and hard braking. Im using some Ultra-racing fender braces to help stop the strut tower from moving towards and away from the firewall but its probably not enough. Will keep a close eye on it when I get some decent power tuned in it.

Sorry for digging up an old thread but im currently going threw the same thing in my gsr.
Ive just had it repaired and extra steel run down the side of the car my plan is to run fender bars a well.
I did a search on bracing like mentioned in this post but nothing else came up but this post.
Does any one have pic of the evo bracing? Can i just get it cut out of a half cut and get it welded in?
Keen to do it properly make this problem never come back.

Yeah you can unpick all the bracings from an Evo front cut and weld them onto your GSR. I think it may interfere with the passenger side chassis number stamped on the top of the strut tower though from memory?
someone will have to confirm. Its a fiddly job but its more fiddly to repair a cracked firewall I guess.

Mine only cracked behind the clutch. I just got a big price of steel from bunnings. Welded that on. Updgraded from cable to hydroloc. But when it was cable had to make an extra brace to hold the cable out further.

Cool ill sus it out hoping to score a empty front cut cheap
I think i should do it with the power im running

Daniel u are more than welcome to get the braces off my evo, I showed them to ya last week...

Yeah cool ill buzz you. I remember the bracing around the strut tower but cant remember how it goes along the wiper motor area

Yeah that's correct you gonna trim about 10mm of the evo brace to clear ur chassis #.
