A couple of days ago whilst driving, the engine cut out. Cut back in and out (sharply) 3 or 4 times before staying off. It came to rest at the bottom of my driveway so grabbed another car and towed it up to the house.

Added more fuel just to be sure it had plenty to work with then tested for spark with a negative result.

Opened up the wiring on the back of the ignition switch that has always been a bit touchy. Found and bypassed an immobilizer that I've never used. And checked at the distributor that it was recieving voltage when the key was on.

So now I'm looking at the ignition system and have questions.

What I see is what looks like a mechanical distributor, and as it has no high tension lead coming into it, only low voltage, I'm assuming its got the coil built into it. I'd like to confirm that if possible. And generally seek any information that people can offer about this problem. I will take a pic just to be sure, as I note quite a range of 4G63 configurations.

thanks in advance.

i thought HJ galants were V6 and only HG and HH were 4cyl?

I know that the HG galants with the SOHC 4g63 still have a coil for the distributor. But the distributor is a full engine management one so there is no mechanical weights in it.and i think the igniter pack will be on the coil.on the intake manifold near the injectors.i think from memory

Hi, taa for the reply. Its got HJ on its VINplate. And I have found other evidence of this engine in the same model online, so I believe its factory fitted one.

I will grab a torch and see if I can spot a coil on the manifold, cheers. I see from pics that the carby models had theirs there for sure.

ahh thats a 16 valve SOHC.similer to the 4G64 2.4 motors in some tritons.HG/HH galants are only 8 valve SOHC and only they have the coil on the manifold.according to your pictures i would say the coil is inside the distributor, thats why there are 2 plugs on it

Buy my HJ Galant and change the engine to the V6 Quad cam :)

Im only chasing $1600 for the whole car

Taa for the offer. I'd enjoy a 6. But right now the priority is getting to work unfortunately. So having confirmed that its a coil and dizzy unit. Can anyone shed any light on the two plugs I'm looking at? The small 2 pin unit has one wire going back into the loom, the other wire going to the small condenser as seen in the 2nd pic.

I get the impression this ignition style is right on the cusp of old style EI and new. But don't know how much input if any the ECU has.. Or why the main plug has 6 connections.

If anyone could shed any light on this all in one unit before I go buying parts, that would be great.

Cheers.

Ok well, I'll keep updating this thread on the off chance that the info is usefull to someone someday.

Current status is I've tracked down the appropriate Manual and confirmed the all in one EI thing. Tested the coil and it failed on its secondary reading. Primary coil on a scale of .9 to 1.2 ohms came in at 1.2 2ndary coil read 15k ohms from an expected range of 20k-29k Ohms.

So. Naturally most ppl want to sell me a complete dizzy for roughly $550 (repco) = ouch.
Factory numbers..
Part ID: T6T58271
Part No: MD188610

And its possible that all it needs is the coil. So now I'm trying to chase down one of those. Bosch lists one as a BIC608, but doesn't differentiate between SOHC and DOHC.

I'll keep trying to narrow it down as I hope to buy a $145 coil if thats all I need. If there are any 4G guru's on here that can shed any light, it would be much appreciated.

Or if anyones wrecking a SOHC 16valve, sing out. :)

If you want the full engine manual and the gearbox manuals let me know, i got majority of the mitsu engines

Had a similar probs with my ggsr dohc engine from a hg. No spark. Check cranknangle sensor. Coil pack and ignitors. My problem was one simple wire to the ecu that had shorted out

Thanks for the offer of manuals, I think after long last I've gotten to the bottom of the mystery coil.

I ended up pulling the dizzy, and breaking it down. Established the coil part number as a H3T 031. Which translates to a Nardek 502-556. Which costs $66.50 and I just ordered one. Hopefully tomorrow I can put it all back together and fire her up.

FWIW, Nardek have been super helpful, and just seem to know things that other parts people have struggled with. Like which part number to look for, where to find it, etc. I like dealing with companies who know their product.

Well, glad to report a fixed car result.
It was the crank angle sensor (as suggested originally by Gianni) but good to do that failing coil anyway.

Another shout-out goes to Nardek for their $140 C.A.S - as opposed to the $400 quoted by the regular offenders. Really could not be happier with them :)

Also, nice to be able to end a thread with a solution for any who follow later.

Screw the bus tomorrow; I'm driving!
