So this year I took my camera in my backpack every day of riding that I went out. Unfortunately being in my pack, whenever I wanted to take a quick photo (bear, someone riding, etc), by the time I had the camera out of my pack the opportunity was lost. On top of this, it was a very average camera at taking action photos. Always blurry!

I'd like something that I can keep in my pocket, which will definitely take good action shots, and can survive a shower of rain (while in my pocket or backpack) and some decent impacts from time to time.

Any ideas?

Panasonic, although not famed for the quality of their image sensors, does have exceptionally fast electronics. Plus they have optically image stabilised lenses.

For what you want, I'd take the panasonic over the olympus, granted the olympus is the "traditional" tough choice, but I'd personally rather be able to actually take a photo quickly and without fuss than worry about noise etc etc.

I know this doesn't sound overly technical... I just always ask about these sorts of camera when i see them.

I know two people that have broken the Olympus camera that are supposedly water proof to something like 3-10 meters.
One mate brok two of them before they have up, one when i was at the beach with him and we were throwing it to each other in the water to get pics. It didn't hit anything hard though. Screen goes blank and it takes pics for a bit still, then later on dies.
Another mate had one of them, it went in for warranty and were told it was "due to water damage". No shit, but i was were only used for snorkeling so didn't exceed its depth rating at all. And i know this girl cant free dive either.
This happened in the last 1-2 years so maybe there is new rang out now?

On a recent trip up north someone had one of the Panasonic cameras that's waterproof to ~10meters (not a full diving camera or nothing) and it was awesome and took great pics underwater and even in some bad lighting when she stuck it in a fish tank. And it got dropped heaps and still going strong.
Maybe worth checking out the Panasonic range.
99% home built for a life time warranty. Engine now needing repair under 'warranty'

That will be my next P&S for the missus to carry.
HID stands for "High Intensity Discharge", or if you dont adjust them properly, "Hi I'm a Dickhead".

Thanks fellas, really appreciate the suggestions. Time to start thinking. Also pretty keen on a Go Pro HD for next year. :D
