for interest the whole budget is $2500, with me doing everything from wiring to welding stainless exhaust, to gearbox rebuilds. and that includes buying the doner vehicle and includes selling any left overs. i am on track with the car driving fine already and easy $1k left for diff.
to wind back the clock further, i had a my96 wrx wagon, and i sold it for $8k. i reckoned i could have the ute purchased, converted and painted with a bit of change if lucky. i paid $3500 for ute. so i still on track.
stay tuned guysl,
i have a dream...

both are 4 on 144.3

this is miles from other measurements of 1460. i not sure where others have measured from, but it looks like from inside backing plates. anyway i off to the wreckers to look at diffs.
my figures from a chart of rim offsets and car specs for track width suggests that i need to look at vn-vt diffs, and prob some falcon stuff too.

it is basically bare with brakes but no calipers. any way plan was to use the long axle out of it for use in a AU axle, but i think it probably not worth the bother for 18mm. i reckon i can make at least half of it by fiddling around. i dont want to use spacer plates as i dont want to lose the centre register. maybe i can space the axles out slightly (5mm each ish) and just cop the rest. with smaller tyres they should clear the inners ok.
there is 0mm offset on it and thats why there is a short axle and a long one
so i pulled the plasma cutter out and trimmed all the mounts off the diff ready for grinding. even got the daughter to have a go as well
i have access to another diff that has leaf hangers on it, so i may have to get it and cut it up for the hangers.
may have ballsed this up as a 3.45 ratio diff may not fit in this housing, something to do with pinion bearings or something.

had a issue with the idle, it seemed too high and now i have a tacho i can see that it was about 2500 when cold and 1700 warm. i saw that the throttle was almost fully shut and the screw was almost in fully. so i taped off the 2 holes in the throttle body. then it wouldnt idle at all. this told me the issue was in the cold idle up or the stepper. if i screw out the idle screw i could hear the stepper trying to adjust the idle so i figured the cold idle up was the culprit. anyway i swapped it out with another and now i have 1100 cold idle and 950 warm. sweet.

best of 3 runs today got me a 15.5 @ 92mph with a 2.5s 60ft
1st gearchange is just before the 60ft mark. need to try again either starting in second or holding 1st a touch longer. i was short shifting into second to avoid the wheelspin.

price: $100 for au diff and 50 for el diff.
have to cut some spot welds out where the centre is welded to the axle tubes. they are mighty hard, had the drill press on them and all. ordered a carbide cutter and we will see how that goes...

my press is a $90 from marlows when they were still around. was cheap even then. even when its on slow, it still too fast for a 25mm cutter.

Mine is about 40years old. it needs two guys to lift the base with the back. I reckon its at least 125 kg the whole thing.
any way....let me know if you want to try it out. I probably wont be able to assist but will more than likely be home for three weeks from the 23.
I get that shoulder done then...I think I told you about that.
