evo 3 converted gsr
#1

Latish last year in 2010 I bought a Gsr which had been converted by some Martin Griggs? to Evo 3 spec which included engine/drivetrain etc off a member off this site which was shaunevo
When I got the car it wasnt and still isnt in the best condition at all and after getting through xmas and a brief rest in between jobs, I (meaning my wallet!) am ready to bring some shine back to this vehicle
Things that need attention on the car are:
SIDE SKIRTS - Ive got some sika flex to remount them smoothly BUT Ive lost the locknut to the wheel nuts so I havent been able to take the wheels off to get to them more easily If anyone can tell me where to get one of the hexagon type locknuts (very common although not at any the usual outlets for sale ) from that would be much appreciated
CV JOINTS - Shes got loud clicking on both turns and lately has developed a annoying tapping (dont think its metallic) noise in 4th gear which gets worse on acceleration and eases up on decel, I called Advanced Jap Autos to see if they could have a look at it for me and it seems that the job was probaly not worth their time so thay called me back and said they couldnt do it, If anyone knows a shop or backyarder who can help me I would greatly appreciate the pointer
That is all the basic things that are wrong with the car atm and hopefully that is as bad as it gets fingerscrossed! and again if anyone can help with the above please feel free to reply any suggestions as I wont be start to mod this car until the above is attended to.
Since Ive had the car Ive had the timing belt and fluids changed and new spark plugs.
Ive been reading on this site for a bit and it seems the 3 engine isnt too boost happy so I had to have a real think about the direction I want to modify this in. Im hoping with basic mods to acheive around the 300bhp mark>Am I dreaming
The very first things Im going to do is relocate the battery to the boot and install a boost gauge just to check how much boost shes running with a ralliart chip?
Then I do the usual breathing mods full turbo back exhaust intake etc and "lil" bit more boost
(The exhaust seems to be not as sttraight forward as other turbo cars according the multiple searches regarding boost creep etc but Ill be asking some more questions regarding that once exhaust time comes)
After the basics Im thinking aftermarket ecu with slighty bigger injectors and getting it tuned along with apprpriate gauges
Also on a side note I believe the car already has a wallbro fuel pump installed, Is it a good thing on its own or should I have a regulator installed as well?
I hope to update asap and will hopefully have some pics up next week although for those of you who the car already know what it looks/looked! like (Damn the white wheels looked so nice on it )
cheers all.

by not boost happy what do you mean? the 63 block can take a fair bit of abuse!
Your boost creep problems may be related to the wastegate flapper on your turbo housing, have a good read of Dane's (3zercrowd) Members ride thread.
Aftermarket ECU? What for? Have a look at the Sponsors section for ECMLink, will be all you need, and will save you alot of money too.
Another set of the "white" wheels (tarmacs) you speak of are currently being sold in the For Sale section if you're keen!
Welcome aboard mate.

Nice car you've picked up there! (Apart from the few issues you've had)

Hi mate and thanks for the welcome
what I meant by not "boost happy" is it seems I wouldnt be able to run as much boost as a E1 OR E2 engine apparently because of the higher compression and around 15-16psi is about max on a standard engine, correct me if Im wrong?
As for the boost creep, I havent come to the exhaust yet I was just mentioning that might not be as straight forward as I thought it would but when it comes time for that Ill definately be asking how to go about it the right way and checking that link thanks
Hmm EcmLink, Ive probaly spent the last 2 hours reading up on it and it seems alot of people on here are happy with the product so I will look into it more when the time comes and as for the Tarmacs I mustve looked at them 20Xs by now but I have to get the C.vs fixed first and I have no idea how much it will cost and where I will go??? Anyone know west subs melb good mech!!???? Awesome wheels though...if only my powerball #S came in

also, get a compression test done just to see if it is the motor with the issues or just the bolt ons

EVO300 Daaar, I so cant wait to get an exhaust put on, where did you get yours done and was the price alright?
Ive just booked my car into a performance shop down dynon rd and they reckon they can rebuild the CVs and driveshafts for what seems to be a decent price,Ill also get a comp test done and do yous think its worthwhile checking for signs of crankwalk? Ive read mixed opinions on here about the shop but hopefully I get out unscathed lol

Matin Griggs' cars are converted Aus-spec FWD Lancers that he did a full AWD/EVO conversion to the body. He did a batch of approx 20x cars back in the day and had them engineered/certified so that he could sell them as road cars.

But Ive since had the car in a shop and had the cvs rebuilt and alot of gaskets on the engine changed as well as the cambelt done and not to mention the gearbox replaced with a 2nd hand unit as mine was stuffed
now after dropping the best part of 3gs i now have my car back with more problems than what i had before hand and was wanting to know a few things:
do cvs take time to bed in or something?! when i turn the car when driving it makes this real screech noise and is so fannoying
also
the car runs fine most times but the other day on the wetsern ring it started to jerk and all the engine lights came on and it kept dying on me, so i was stuck on the side of the road for a while and then today it did it again...it seems like its missing real bad.
they mechs gutted the cat converter because they said it had collapsed and i think its got a walbro but no fpr, could any of these cause the above problem??? when i picked up the car the guy told me it was missing BUT it wasnt that BAD maybe this could be a contributer???
this used to happen to me before i took the car in but it was caused by one of the cooler pipes that kept blowing off but i have checked them all and theyre still on tight
if anyone has any ideas please let them be said here
cheers

with your pipes blowing off , you should check that your not running excessive boost first, it could also fuel cut your car to cut out
the screech noise usually would be a wheel bearing ? but without hearing it , its hard to say
cant wait to see a pic of the car again

yeah the car is back here slowly to be what it used to be once again err i fix the skirts 1st then take pics lil embarrassing really!
I dont have a boost controller on the car atm so it should be running stockish boost the only power mods are a piping kit and a fuji front pipe from the turbo and hi flow panel filter
I just hope its an easy fix as i only just got my car back
any ideas peeps

im not too concerned about the wheel bearing type noise its more the engine light and car dying on me whenever im driving it...thats pissing me off
ive done some searching and it seems it could be the o2 sensor? possibly or something like that so im gonna get one and see if it works??!
although i was thinking how would a 02 sensor get stuffed...just over time? or if it was because the cars running rich could it mean that the new sensor i get (if that even is the problem) stuff up too?
cheers

ill definately let you know whats up when i hear back from the mechs though
(costing alot of money just to have the car run like normal is sheeeit/rather be spending on mooore powah )
