hey guys. just thought i would share with everyone. today me and my mate burnzy were bored and had nothing to do so thought we would convert an evo 5 ecu into my evo 2.
after going to the wreckers and sorting out the obd port and the extra plug for the ecu as the later model ecu has 4 plugs and ours have 3 plugs. instead of hacking up my loom and repining the wires we decided to change the pinouts on the ecu internally. after half a days of running around and testing and messing about we got it all fired up and running. threw the wideband on and went for a drive. stuffed around for awhile to scale the airflow meter and did abit of tuning and logging. final results are evo 5 ecu is kick ass on my car and can be obtained for relatvely cheap. my plans are to run e85 and crank up the boost and get it all tuned with the evo 5 ecu in the next week or so. i wanted to share this with everyone and if anyone was interested in going this path i could ask my mate to make something up thats straight plug and play so you dont have to mess around with wiring or soldering for a certain amount i guess. or you could pm him on evo oz if your a keen diyer and he would be more then happy to point you in the right direction. im not trying to advertise for him or anything just sharing my experience, its a cheap alternative for the diyers and it has all sorts of functions such as dual map. perfect for e85

is there a particular reason the evo5 ecu was chosen?
is it a better choice than others?

can you up the boost with the stock solenoid with the E5 ECU?

Yep, burnzy is a gun...

Travis - from what I know, you can not. However, evo ecu's (using evoscan) can only use certain brand 3 ports: Grimmspeed/GM. Though, I know Troy (burnzy) is using Apexi.

can be done very easy too, with a evo 6 apexi power fc ecu in to a gsr, i picked one up for dirt cheap only had to change a couple wires from memory, obd port and harness not needed as you can use hand controller runs sweet for me, just letting people know so they dont spend $300 on that jumper harness it aint worth it

you can use evo 5 to 9 ecus as they are all flashable via evoscan. evo 5 and 6 ecus werent flashable till recently. i got the evo 5 ecu off a mate that had upgraded to evo 7 ecu because they werent flashable half a year ago. you can control boost via the ecu by running a 3 port solnoid which can be bought fairly cheap. i got a gm 3 port from ebay for about 60 bucks delievered. the best thing is that it is still a sstock ecu so it still takes timing out if it detects knock and theres overboost control and all sorts of things.

Any idea what the injector resolution is(any model evo ecu)?
The Microtech has quite large steps, 0.05mS from memory, which is proving rather annoying.

don't you already have an ecmlink? probably easier to use that than mess around with the e5 ecu. however, if anyone is interested, i have a pre-made apexi harness available for this =) pm me.

Correction, 5/6 ecu's were flashable over half a year ago - burnzy flashed my 6 ecu in July 2010.
But they did not have dual map capability til recently, also reason I changed to an evo 8 ecu (usdm) and went e85/98 (Oct 2010).

Did burnzy put launch control and enable CEL for knocking for you?
I'll always go to burnzy for all my tuning...

This is good news! I was thinking about puting my JDM TME ecu into my Evo III and a Evo VII Ecu into my Tommie as a cheaper way to get some decent power in both cars. I thought it might be too hard as I have very limited knowledge about electrics but it seems like a fairly straight forward swap.

dont need a patch harness or anything nk. you can jump the pins by soldering wires to the ecu internally therefore it is a straight plug and play. dont have to repin my loom at all. thanks for the correction tmak. we havent had much time to play with the ecu. just threw in a base map so i could drive around. knock light is essential. lol having a wideband is also i good thing i reckon. think ive met you at burnzys while you were getting your car tuned. hows e85 treating you? im thinking of going the same path hence why going with ecu that had dual map.

Don't suppose you could do a "How To" write up on this 90xsi?

well i was gonna re pin my loom originally but burnzy came up with the idea of jumping it internally. im abit unsure with this method. if you want just send him a pm on evooz. he should be more then happy to guide you through it.

Thanks for the kind words guys, just wanted to clear some things up, 300 for a complete plug an play flashable ecu not just a harness.. Also power fc has nothing on the later model ecus, slower processor, less functions, no active knock control, no switchable maps or anything of the sort. Stock ecu even drives smoother due to the faster ecu.
The evo5/6 can in fact drive any of the 3 port solenoids used on evos and does a very good job of it too. E7 ecu used to be the go but now the e5/e6 ecus can do the same job at a lot cheaper price. Have done ecmlinks and have to say I prefer the e5 ecu

Yes it would plug straight in but at the moment only have the scaling for Evo maf/injector combo so you would have to find someone to tune it for you in qld unless you go Evo injectors and maf in which case I have a pretty good custom map for
