That got very hot. What was it for? Why so much current draw?

The dead wiring in the 2nd pic is the cause of the smoke from the second attempt after swapping out the fuse, I think the wear and tear on the brown wire in the first pic is what caused the short as there was a small cable tie there which looked like it had cut into the wires insulation. The annoying part is, that the part of the loom in question is actually unused as it seems to be for an oxy sensor. Looks like Bensons car was largley standard in the sensor department when he ran this Autronic as we also found when putting the final touches to the car that it had no Autronic air temp sensor and the wiring from the SMC seemed to be using a pin on the adaptor that pointed to the factory temp reading from the AFM (Benson must have been retaining the AFM in his early configuration). Strange way to go about it :S must have just been a cheap C$NT to not spend $80 on the sensor

Anyhoo, I pulled the adaptor loom out about an hour ago and stripped the burnt and redundant wiring from it. Fuse replaced and the car lives again!!!

Very little happening with this thing recently. Currently forumlating plans to cure the shifting woes I have with the current gearbox. Not sure whats going on, but next time Dirks got some time in the coming months we will pull it apart and see what's what. I have bought a 2nd hand Evo II gearbox for parts, part of the plan may involve swapping the current Evo I "Big hub" 3rd and 4th for the Evo II "Small hub" stuff.

Failing that, I'm also looking into designing a 4340 Cro/Mo flywheel flywheel to suit an Evo 7.25" twinplate clutch. The theory behind this is that the big heavy singleplate may be having disengagement issues, especially at the higher rpms...

Sigh.. POS.

if your going to use a smaller clutch, look at an ex-nascar clutch from the us,
then get a driveplate from an auto and the get a friction plate fitted to it.
works a treat B)

Well, it's been a dissapointing summer of [no] racing for this thing. Financial setbacks along with issues with the car have lead to a pretty average time over the past 6-9 months to the point where I was considering cutting my losses, selling up and finding a cheaper hobby. Apathy can be such a joy killer.

Anyhoo, the past 10 days or so I've had off work I have spent some time reading through some mates build threads on a private forum, mainly as a source of inspiration to get my ass into gear. On Wednesday I ventured into the garage for the first time in several months and started to pull it apart. As some of you know, the gearbox has been playing up since day 1, getting worse as time went on. Doubly frustrating as the 'box was rebuilt before it went in. Dirks been kind enough to sell me a spare Evo II 'box, to rob of it's 3rd/4th gears in the hope changing to a small hub setup will help in the fixing of things. I plan to address a few other things over winter should funds allow.

Goals to be completed before October 2011:

- Gearbox sorted and shifting nicely. This is number one priority, not much point doing other crap if this isn't sorted.
- Seat mounting. The Sparco Evo II I have fitted on STA/M&H sliding rails still sits me WAY too high. Will look into getting some box section welded in so I can drop the seat height a good 50mm.
- CE9A rear lateral arms fitted. Just been to apathetic to bother with this, should be a quick one
- Front 5 stud conversion. Easy peasy, FTO hubs. At this stage I'm going to stick with the twinpots up front, unless funds allow. I ditched the Evo Brembo front caliper plan long ago, so have a few ideas on other options.
- Dirk spec custom rear trailing arm/toe control conversion. When Gordon gets the time (and I can afford it) to whip me up some of the inserts. I'll post some details on thios when I have it done.
- Rear Brembo conversion. Intend on doing this at the same time as the trailing arms while it's all apart. Again, funds depending, gotta pay for the brackets Dirk had made up for me. If all else comes to fail, i'll just press some 5 stud flanges in and retain the current braking setup.
- GET IT ROAD LEGAL. Probably one of the more important things, getting this cert'd would mean I can at least drive it around without having to watch my rear view mirror constantly.
- TUNE! Since the boost control issues that arose when we changed to the TD06SL2 turbine were sorted long ago, I really should get it's ass back to Kents for a full tune to some more serious boost pressures, (we had 22-24psi in mind). Of course thats another $650 to come up with.

A lot of the above means I'll be moving to running the 17x7.5" TME rims I picked up a few years back. Will probably involve some sort of backyard flaring (jack handle styles) to clear things. The brake setup is the most ambitious part of this lot, I may do away with this idea if money is looking too tight.

Insert familiar pic of Mirage back on axle stands :(

Just do each step one at a time Jarred, that's all you can do. I put up a whiteboard on my garage wall and wrote down everything I needed to do as I remembered or come across them. It was a great feeling to get to the last couple of items crossed off the list before engineering. It's a good motivator seeing lines crossed out. It also gets your head in the right place as you can put $$ figures against lines and work out your funds. Im sure with Dirk in your corner anything is achievable. He's been the most influential guru and source of information during my build over the years - the man has my respect many times over :)

Yeah, Dirk is to credit, (or to blame? Hah) for a lot of the ideas for this car. I remember when I bought it, the plan was just to drop a stock GSR engine in for a bit of boost while I built the GSR up. Fail!

See previous thread here: http://www.4gtuner.c...11547-the-rage/

Well I can finally say I have got one modification underway this winter. Attached is a pic of the inserts I had my mate Gordon machine up to replace the factory rear trailing arm bush along with the factory Mitsubishi Spherical swivel joints which get pressed into them. The inserts are welded into the trailing arms and rear toe is controlled by stacking washers either side of the bolt that goes into the body.

This not only eliminates all slop from the trailing arm bush, it also gets rid of the more than average factory toe control setup.

Win!

In other news, I've got an Evo X turbo on it's was from the US.

Why Evo X I hear you ask?

Well!

It's a normal rotation TD05H as the 4B11 is the same orientation as 4G63 in Evo I - IIIs. The difference is that the Evo X TD05H has a 12cm twinscroll exhaust housing. The plan is to machine it out use it on my TD06SL2 20G based turbo, for a few reasons:

1: Twinscoll will bring the boost threshold of the TD06SL2 down, hopefully back to around 1bar @ 4krpm
2: I can co back to a simpler internal wastegate setup
3: It's an excuse to get a nice tubular steampipe manifold made. To take advantage of the twinscroll housing, the runners for cylinders 1 and 4, and 2 and 3 will have to be paired and kept separate into the turbine housing. Grouping the pulses out of the cylinders like this is part of why this setup should increase the response of my TD06SL2 turbine.

Sadly this'll mean I'll be selling my very nice looking HPC coated factory manifold, turbine housing/wastegate feed, 38mm TiAL and custom 2.5" front pipe. Some serious $$ spent on HPC thermal barrier coatings for this lot. This'll only be useful for someone else running a TD06SL2 (as the housing is machined for it) on a GSR or Evo I - III with a stock exhaust manifold, so I may have to build another TD06SL2 20G based turbo in order to shift it.

So, had my workmate drop off a couple of Evo X turbos on her way back home from the airport this morning. I've already pulled the exhaust housing off mine and listed the rest of the turbo on trademe to hopefully recoup my costs.

Evo X exh housing.JPG

With that, I've made the decision to pull the plug on this build in it's current format, and move on to preparing the GSRs shell to receive this setup. I'll be saving for a good six months before I start with the panel and paint, so prepare to have a dry spell of updates from either of my cars hah.
