1995 aus spec GSR

Swapped the dash loom over to run climate control.
Had a few hiccups with somethings not working but got it sorted in the end.
While the dash was out I took the opportunity to "Flock" it. For anyone that doesn't know what flock is: it is a fine 1mm or so fibre of a material. You get it in a bag and glue it onto the dash pad and or trims. You have to apply the glue, put the fibres in the applicator (my kit came with a squeeze bottle) and puff them onto the glue. Wait 24hrs and brush off the excess. The end result if done right resembles a suade like finish. The kit said to be done between 15-21 degrees but I didn't listen and the glue dried to quick. It's patchy under some light but looks ok lol. Also did the A pillar trims.
Also bought a "Nardi" steering wheel. I like the oem momo ones but I think this suits the car better.
I have also competed using the GSR in 2 local gymkhana event (have previously raced the event 3 times using a ke70 corolla and a Hyundai Accent).
Didn't do to great the first time due to time penalties (hitting cones is a +5sec penalty) but managed the 9th fastest single time (out of 35 drivers and 7 or so runs).
The 2nd gymkhana was the Sunday just fine and I had a much better run. They usually change up the course layout but opted to leave it the same as last time. This was good because it gave me the chance to compete against my last times. Which I managed to better by a second for 2. My main rival was an early wrx with quite a good driver. We were very close through out the day with only 1 second between us (him 1 second faster). I was thinking all I have to do is shave 1 second off and I could beat him and claim the AWD class win. Second last run and I wrecked my clean day by clipping a cone... I was so pissed of because I'd just thrown away my chance at the win... until the next round when the wrx driver went out and bumped a cone (YESSSS!!!). This appeared to piss him off as he went all out after that, got a little too throttle happy and spun it out on the last turn. So in the end I managed to claim the trophy lol.
On top of that I managed the 10th fastest single time and an overall position of 7th out of 34 drivers.
All in all a good day.
Apart from the car running really rich and a leak from the rocker cover somewhere (think there might be a crack in it around the centre bolts), the car is really good to drive. Little bit of turbo lag low down but that can probably be tuned out I'd imagine.
Next mods I think will be getting the evo 8 ecu in and tuned, fit evo front brakes, sort out the busted idle speed controller and clutch master ( the way the manifold has been modified allowed the isc to hit the clutch master :/).
Probably get a hydro handbrake to touch up the rear. Fit the lsd in the rear and the poly engine mounts. Otherwise it's a quick fun car. Will hopefully take it to the wondai street sprints if they have spots available still
Thanks for looking

Yeah not keen on that part, every time you pull the dash out of a GTi something else stops working when you re fit it.
What turbo did you end up running? Did you go with the 3" cover on the Td05? Any idea what power it's making?

Haha fair enough.
Um yea 3 inch cover on td05 and the gt pumps rear. No idea on power figure. Probably less than stock because it's running so bad at the moment lol.

Had a couple of -10 fittings welded on tommy spare rocker cover so I can fit the catch can I bought from dougmo ages ago. This was brought on due to a bad oil leak coming from the rocker cover somewhere. I pulled the spark plug cover off so I could swap over the rocker covers, this is what I discovered...
Don't know how that happened, must have over tightened the bolt there by the crack :/
Think I need a new set of spark plugs. Car had been running fine up until I moved it out this morning. I think the oil sitting in the spark plug holes had seeped through the spark plugs and wrecked them, the ends were dripping with oil. I cleaned them off but it still wouldn't idle.
Gave the engine bay a good degrease and pressure wash too. Have never seen the colour of the gearbox before lol.
Also wasted a coupe of hours and whites out the letters on my tyres. Have always liked the look.

The stock breathers on the 93 rocker cover are way too small when you start running decent boost. I used to get a bit of oil in the catch can, so opened mine up to -10 and haven't had any since (it's been almost a year).
Good to know, I had a dual catch can setup before and the breather off the rear of the cover didn't pass any oil but the pcv one had half filled the can between now and the last service. Hopefully the bigger fittings and baffled can will stop or at least help the loss of oil.
This engine has 300k km so the rings are probably pretty tired, although a dry comp test came up as 150 across all 4.

Mucked around with the coils so they will sit below the plug cover for a neater finish. I had a mate mill down the raised rings around the spark plug holes so the coils could sit lower. Cut up the old plate they were bolted to as a bracket for them. Just need a now plug cover now, anyone got one laying around?
Hopefully no more oil leaks from the top end and anywhere else for that matter haha.
