I agree...just drive it to somewhere where you have all the right gear to do it..just gonna be a shit fight otherwise...will be much easier to do it by removing box and engine too.

Rev match it to where you need to go. Easy as piss. Just turn the engine off at the lights, put it in first while off and start it up in first and rev match up all over again.

I reckon you have to pull the box mate. Sometimes a shortcut turns out to be a long cut. Do it right to begin with. I got forks if you need one

Oh, and its easy with the engine still in. Just remove the opposing mount and support the engine with a jack while in there. Might need some timber to keep the engine from tilting too much.

Another reason my vr4s are better. Mounts are on the engine and makes this type of work much easier! :-)

True. If you jam it you will destroy syncros. But like I said don't jam it. Let it gently slot it

This happened to me last year in my VR4... in Adelaides peak hour traffic ie lots of stop start traffic lights. I've been racing/rallying for 20 years ( including dog boxes) so I have an idea or two on rev matching on the down shift. That was a VERY stressful 20 km trip home !! The VR4 gearbox would have to be the HARDEST gear box to match revs on a down change I have ever had to do this on !! I ended up knackering the 3rd gear synchro/dog teeth on gear. Driving like this is fine if there is not much traffic or stops.... otherwise get a tow if you dont want to bugger the synchros. Driving with no clutch also teaches you to read traffic patterns VERY well LOL

yeah definately not worth risking a gearbox rebuild for $100 towing. just inspected the clutch fork, and for the purpose of this thread, it is definately NOT possible. the bellhousing casting blocks access to the bearing clip.

might try and tough this one out in the carpark, unless anyone knows of a workshop in the caulfield area that won't charge a fortune.

thanks barry, but i already have a spare here ready to go.

i dunno what they charge over your way, but here they wanted around $400 to rnr gearbox on the wrx and they are easier than a gsr. i sure it was 1200 for a clutch change, with $400 being labour. so i did it myself.

at least it doesnt have to come all the way out, only 99% of the way.

Yep I agree with the above....$400 is about the going rate for remove and replace on an Evo/Gsr over here too....
So easy to do yourself but...Pay the $100 for the tow and save yourself $300 by doing it yourself at home with all the right tools.

I think khubner1 is great. Always helpful and has some good ideas. What does it matter if it's just his dad. Or him and his dad or just him. We are all here to learn. We are all here to help out.
