Hey guys.

Since purchasing my 97 RVR HSG, I've noticed a rather loud rattling noise when backing off the accelerator in 3rd, and a lesser noise, but of the same type, in 4th.
The noise seems to be a little louder when backing off the accelerator down a hill also.
The noise is concentrated at, or around 50km/h.

I had a look underneath today. All the brackets are tight, cat looks fine, muffler is fine.
I did notice that there is a piece of exhaust flex pipe that rests on the sump.
Could this be the cause?

I have heard of this happening when a lightweight flywheel is in, but to my knowledge, the car doesn't have one.

Need some opinions and/or experience with this topic before looking into it further, i.e spending money to fix the fucker.

Sounds like the same thing we have. My gearbox man reckons it's the input shaft bearing.
Our flywheel has been skimmed and balanced but isn't what I would call lightweight.

Hmm, we have an Exedy Fast Road clutch fitted but I'm fairly certain it's not the clutch springs [which can rattle].

I'm with Beastlee, clutch springs, ring Chris at meek and tell him symptoms.
Save yourself a lot of money.
I had clutch changed (old one r/s) and rattle started after a couple of months,
got gearbox rebuild change tail shaft hanger bearing did not help, rang chris he fixed it quick

+1 for clutch springs. Had same issue on my galant. Changed the clutch to one with rubber replacing few springs and solved the problem.

Thanks guys.
Was hoping it was an exhaust rattle, although expecting it to be a clutch/gearbox issue :(
I'll look into it!

Youtube a video of the noise :)
Do you notice the noise when the car is idling in neutral and parked? Does it disappear when you step on the clutch pedal?

It's only when the car is moving, and when I have released my foot off the throttle, around 50km/h in third gear. It is also slightly notIceable in 4th.
If I put my foot on the clutch while I hear the noise, it goes away.

Definitely the same issue here.
