This is my latest Seekonk video. Another fun race day and another ruined motor... This is getting old really fast...

I have now lost TWO motors at this event, basically, my last two outings… First time, I didn’t overfill the oil, as I usually do, the second time (this video), I was about ¼ inch over the high mark on the dipstick. I just took apart last year’s motor, which had badly spun #1 rod bearing:

EF2003D1-A3F8-4A10-9F95-6304CD4D7352_zps

But #4 bearings also showed signs of starting to do:

6C266712-711C-4AEC-BD10-9A8E0F6E0BCB_zps

It is easy to point to the long left turn call it the cause of these failures, but… I have been doing this type of racing since the late 1990’s, I must have done well over 30 events, making over 100 passes. Most of them were in a FASTER DSM (some laps were timed under 17 seconds). Fedja also did this event on autox tires, so he was pushing more G’s than what I am doing on this relatively bad handling van.

Could the extreme roll, due to higher CG making THE difference in this case? Because DSMs do not seem to have this problem.

I am building another motor, but I want to make sure that is this isn’t going to happen again! I am thinking of installing a Moroso oil pan and possibly look into an Accusump. Any other ideas? Now that my fuel system is under control, I am thinking of logging oil pressure.

Kiggly was logging oil pressure. Its on his website. He shows that the small oem filter has a pretty big restriction in it. Maybe twin big oil filters may help.

I do not think this is the type of oil problem I have here, I suspect that I am loosing it at the oil pickup.

It has factory baffles. So the fact is that faster DSMs do not this problem on this track and they have the same oil system. The only thing that is different about the Summit is that it is taller and it rolls a lot more during cornering (in the "bad" direction for oil pickup).

Could include one of kiggly oil restrictors. So that more oil stays in sump.
Maybe you can video the oil pressure guage?

Maybe the other bearings are getting splash fed from being submerged in oil.
Maybe no1 is high and dry, no4 is drowned and starving and 2-3 are drowned and getting hungry.

#1 cylinder oil flow is shared with lubricating oil pump and rear balance shaft, so it is the first to starv if there is any shortage of oil. In my case, i no longer have a balance shaft, so it is a bit better. But not enough.

I haven't yet taken the latest motor apart to see what has failed.

The other Talon was running much bigger race tires, E85 and much bigger turbo. Beating cars like this, from outside lane, is impossible...

I just purchased Kiggly HLA regulator. I am looking to add the following:

HLA
Moroso pan
Some porting on oil return passages
Modify the oil pick up.

Then I will have to decide if I want to risk it again...

I picked up some 16x8.5" wheels for better handling, but unfortunately they 5 lugs.  So I am going to convert my Summit to five logs.  Does anyone have a parts car with 5 lug spindles?  I would also take some rear disc backing plates, so that I can do disc conversion.
