I'll like once I'm tuned for about 1.7bar or so (at least!) and can start to go WOT against some Skylines!

I got news today too. First drags of the year is April 15th. That gives me 3 weeks to get tuned, diagnose any problems along the way, and get some practice in launching on the twin plate and not killing myself through wheelspin. Lots and lots to do. Good job I've got 2 weeks off work now :)

A day of ups and downs as always with the car. Got my oil leak sorted and I am almost certain it's not the transfer case. Looked to be coming from where the turbo drain line meets the oil pan. Tightened that up and it looks like it might have done the job.

Switched out the air filter to my Blitz SUS which should handle any rain hitting it a little better than the K&N that was on there. I also took apart the wastegate which seemed in fine condition, although I'm not 100% the top of it is completely true (I know... buy XS Power and what can you expect). It'll do for now but isn't a perfect situation.

I did notice that my AFRs were going pretty lean when cruising. I like to drive around relatively lean but these were in the 17s and beyond. Checked and I've got a fuel leak where my braided line connects to the fuel rail. Couldn't fix it right so tomorrow am gonna try to get all new fittings and hose, and get it sorted. Last thing I need now is for fuel to be falling onto hot downpipe.

It should be quick when it's done, thanks.

I'll have some pics at this event, although it's not 1/4 mile. In fact it's not even 1/8 of a mile! It's 150m which is about 1/9 mile, but is the best I can get on island. I do have a Blitz Power Meter in my car for measuring quarter miles on... ahem... let's say less than private roads. I'll post logs and pictures of that but probably not videos ;)

I would love to get up to mainland, and compete in the drags at Sendai, but I don't have the money for it this year I don't think. Will have to be a project for 2013.

The car got the full treatment today: wash, claybar, polymer coating, steam cleaned interior, engine bay clean, and pretty much everywhere else you can think of polished. As you can guess from the pics, I'm pretty pleased with the results.

Thanks to Chris Willson at www.travel67.com for the last photo too - really pleased with how mean looking that's turned out.

I just got some generic one from Ebay. Not the cheapest but not the most expensive. They're probably all made in the same factory by some 6 year old Chinese child labourer anyway...

I found a few things out over the past few days. First off, I shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a soldering iron again. Driving down the road, come to a set of lights and the engine just dies. Must be my lack of skills with the twinplate so I start it again. Dies again. Damn. Push car across 2 lanes to the side of the road and start to try find out what's going on. After about 2 1/2 hours I finally found out it was something electrical. Turned out a ground wire I'd soldered had come free which had lose me all power. Nice one, Dave!

And I have found out my lean issue. It wasn't actually running lean, or the O2 sensor on my car. Turns out it was one of the wires going into the wideband. When the bodyshop had stuck the gauge in place they'd put the wires in but one had almost come out of the connector. Pushed that in and bang, correct fuelling being reported.

A consequence of that is finding out that I was running hella-rich at idle. Like mid-12s at idle. No wonder I had a fuel economy which can only be described as "rotary-like" in my last tank. Have played around with it a little and have got it leaned to 13s or so but still needs leaning out a lot more. It's strange though - when I fire up the car (even when hot) it'll settle down and idle at 17-18 (i.e. where I want it for a nice lope), but then if I drive and come to a stop, the idle only goes to about 13 or so. Need to make a couple of logs and see if they tell me anything.

Crimp is the way to go these days. But you have to use the good stuff, not the generic stuff you get from Bursons/Autobarn.

So here's the bit of rust that Taki found at the front of my roof when they were changing the windshield. Kind of explains why:
a, I got a stress crack in the windshield from that area
b, the car wasn't the most watertight thing in the world

A bit of tuning done. Estimated 360-380hp or so at only 0.85bar on a hella-conservative map, according to my Blitz Power Meter. Could be even higher than that actually as the Power Meter needs full configuration.

Double the boost, add some timing and it should be a nice little ride. Does get a little scary above 8,000rpm though!

So now its got a bit of a tune when do you start seeing positive boost and when do you see full boost? Just trying to see how it compares to my old hx35. And what sort of rpm are you pushing it too?? Its looking really good mate.

I'll give you some figures, but it's with no boost controller manipulation or spool tuning (which I'm gonna do to speed things up a little later). I'm getting positive boost at 2800rpm and hitting full wastegate boost at just about 4,000. The wastegate springs should be 1bar but they seem to be 0.7-0.8 (damn those Chinese child labourers making XS Power spings!). It's a fully built motor and I'll probably be revving it to anywhere between 7,500 and 8,000rpm. Limiter's set at 8,500rpm. That should be enough to get me just at the end of the 1/4 mile in 4th cos I really don't want to be making the 4th-5th shift.

Slow but steady, that was the name of the game with tuning tonight. I had to rescale the load maps so that I wouldn't drop off the end of them, which meant starting a lot of the tuning from scratch. Tuned to stock wastegate boost first, which was 0.8bar. Ended up being able to throw in a shedload of timing into the map before it even started knocking in the slightest.

So with that done it was time to up the boost a little. The car is boosting 1bar now and the difference on the butt dyno was huge. And even ECMLink was supporting that. An increase in estimated power from 280whp to about 330whp. I didn't finish the 1bar tune (had a little knock on my last run) and have only been tuning to about 6600rpm so far, but the car keeps on making more and more power right up to there, so I might get higher figures if I rev it higher. I'm really pleased with those gains though, and if they continue then it's gonna be a pretty quick car.

Tonight was also good as a learning experience for me and getting to know the car, the noises it makes and how it feels under boost when the wastegates are open. Looking forward to either tomorrow or Thursday night for some more tuning and hopefully I'll be able to get it somewhere up close to 1.2bar, or maybe even more before the weekend.

For those with an interest, this is the ECMLink log from the last run I made, and also the timing map (I know it's a little all over the place - I need to smooth out the figures tomorrow). At 1bar I'm just between the 1.8 and 2.2 load rows.

Tuning got cut short last night due to a little "unwanted" attention. Discretion being the better part of valour (and me not wanting to get arrested!) led to me only getting a couple of runs in. Saying that I did manage to get the boost up to 1.18bar from 1bar previously and picked up 30hp on both my Blitz Power Meter and the ECMLink logs (which is now peaking me at 365whp@7,000rpm). These are just the power gains I want to be seeing, and there's still 20 degrees or so of timing in the map there so potential for quite a bit more.

Last bit of tuning done before tomorrow's drags, and it was pretty successful. I picked up another 30-40whp and am now peaking at 430whp on ECMLink and 470 on the Blitz Power Meter. 100whp gain since Wednesday so I'll take that.

Think the wastegate leak is costing me a couple of 100rpm in spool time though. Another thing I noticed was that at peak boost, the boost was fluctuating by 0.04-0.05bar or so. Could be the boost controller, or could be a tiny bit of surge (but I really doubt it). Was also thinking it could be the wastegates. The springs are about 0.73bar and I'm sure I read somewhere that springs with a boost controller are good until about double their original value. So I'm going over that which could account for the slight fluctuations.

A lot of tuning to do, but I've got something I can work with tomorrow at the drags.
