Next week I'll be taking delivery of an Evo II GSR rolling body. Having watched the price of this particular car drop over the past few months, I've made the tough decision to abandon returning the CD5A GSR to daily duties and sell the shell off. This was mainly due to the cost of getting the shell up to scratch vs the much better condition of the Evo. This does mean the forged engine that's currently in the Mirage (and was destined for the GSR) is up for sale so I can fund the Evo. The good news is that I should be back daily driving a boosted car by the end of the year for the first time since 2004
Plans for the Evo are as follows:
- Use the current parts I have to build a 2.2L 6 bolt short block, fit a Pick a Part small port head with some Kelford TX272s and valvespring upgrade.
- Use the 3.545 driveline from the Mirage after figuring out what's wrong with the 'box. Will be ditching the Jim Berry pressure plate from the clutch and using an Excedy Racing item from Japan with retaining the Carbotic disc - This combo has proven well in a mates CC4A Mirage.
- Rob the Mirage of its front and rear subframes, incl solid mount rear diff setup, Evo V alloy front arms and Evo IV steering rack conversion. Not to mention the Tein Flex's
- Steal the Evo VI brake master cylinder, plus DBA 4000/Carbotech XP8 braking setup from the 'Rage
- Respray in Mitsi Graphite Grey
- Source some frikken Tarmacs somehow.
- Build my version of an old school FP Green (Pre Billet HTA wheels) using a TD06H turbine, Garrett 50 trim TO4E Compressor with the added twist of an Evo X twinscroll exhaust housing.
I'm undecided on the ECU. My heart tells me to go for the cold start reliability of an Evo VII ECU, but having the Autronic SMC setup in the 'Rage will probably prove too tempting.
Its highly probably this car will become a mobile testbed for stuff in the Mirage (when I can revisit it) with regards to braking and suspension mods.

Cheers guys, sourced some Tarmacs already. 17x7" 5x114.3 +45 (Evo IV fitment) which means 5 stud conversion - easy enough. Done a deal to have them resprayed in W83 So will start to locate some stickers. Bonus is that my 17x7.5" +35 TME rims will be a secondary option should I get bored (Will have to get them resprayed too)

aaahhhh so that's what you're up to. I was wondering why you were selling the stroker pistons etc.
Good to see you didnt swap into a later model evo. Keeping to old school cool is in my books.
'Ace' score mate... get it?

Hah, trust me. If I had the $$ to buy a later model Evo, I'd be sinking it into the Mirage instead.
I was selling the pistons so I could start working on tiding the GSRs shell up, but now that I have the Evo I'll put them to good use instead.
One thing that amuses me is that after having been modifying 4WD Mitsis for 10 years now, this is my first Evo and first 4G63

Expecting some trash talk from the 93 owners now lol.

In other news: The Evo has landed, in my backyard. The trip up and back wasn't without its terrors. Having to tow the thing through Papatoetoe in order to pick up an Evo IV front subframe with steering rack ($30!) before heading home wasn't fun. Then, 15kms from which the old mans Mazda Tributes tranny shat itself bigtime. It involved the old man bringing the Bluebird for me to tow the Evo back home, and then return to tow the Mazda.
On the Poobird - As much as I hate that frikken car, boy does it never give up. Seen it tick over 300,000kms 3 times now (Goes to 299,999 then back to 290,000!), its been nearly rolled by my sister (On its side in a ditch) and has made several trips from Hamilton to CHCH and back! Now its managed to survive my daily abuse for two years, impact with my chimney (whoopsie!) and tow a trailer/Evo back, followed immediately by towing the Tribute without batting an eye. If it wasn't such an eyesore and terrible to drive, Its almost enough to make me a Nissan convert!
Anyhoo, PICS
DOH!
The car has a few ricer mods in need of correction:
Steering wheel and white gauges have to go!
Obligatory west auckland boyracer signage
Fail
Turbotimer, fail.
Finally, WTF Key
The doorcards are worse for wear, but I have a set of mint ones ex Evo III (orginally for the GSR) which will replace them nicely. Along with an Evo III rear bench. The rest of the interior can be tidied up with bits from the 'Rage/GSR here and there. Seats are worn, but any I fit will end the same with my fat ass in them over a period of time.
I've thrown out the initial plan in the first post for the meantime, Ive decided to get this on the road ASAP once its fully paid for. Paint is in good enough nick for a road car bar the front bumper - which I may employ a mate for a respray if he's keen.
Plan B:
Stock 6 or 7 bolt. Perhaps some off the shelf forged pistons coupled with the Eagle rods I have here.
Simple TD05H 20G with healthy backcut. May upgrade at a later date.
Evo VII ECU for some tuneability.
The Evo IX 560cc injectors out of the Rage, along with the rest of the fuel system and driveline.

I was tossing up between dericification and unricification heh. Chimney incident was a reversing mishap after my 3rd 12 hour nightshift in a row. Zombies can't reverse for SHIT
Dirk popped round yesterday, the Evo has his seal of approval. We've come up with some cunning ideas, probably going back to the original plan now
