Whats the best performing turbo you can fit in a cc GSR 4G93T with standard internals? Already have a 3" FMIC fitted. I believe I still have the factory turbo. How can I tell?

Look at the numbers on your turbo, the factory turbo will have TD04H on it
Turbo choices depend on what your really after
Theres 3 main choices
Mitsubishi VR4 TD05H 14B - 49178-01400
Mitsubishi EVO1/2 TD05H "small" 16G - 49178-01450 & 49178-01460
Mitsubishi EVO3 TD05H "big" 16G - 49178-01470
Or you can prob use a RVR turbo

It'll be a TD04L 13G
I'll keep banging my head against this Evo I/II "small 16G" myth for years, ALL Evo I-III TD05Hs are BIG 16G 68mm compressors. The Evo I/II 16Gs are good, the Evo III 16G6 is slightly better - mainly due to a lighter compressor wheel and a better exhaust housing design/material.

As with all products you will have good and bad.
I run that turbo and I am not having any issues but then again if I started again I can't be sure which path I would take.

Thanks guys but now Ive got a problem. An oil leak from the head gasket. Drivers side end of the motor. Found it as I was looking for the engine number and turbo number. I'll have to fix that before any other mods. Any advice on changing a head gasket? What head gasket to use?
Thinking about new lifters and cam belt while I'm in there. Cam belt is due I think and my lifters are noisy.
Anything else I should do while it's appart?

make sure it's not coming from the oil press sensor or the cas first!. the oring on the cas has a tendency to leak like a sieve. else look at using the mls gasket for the 1.6l mivecs

Get a gt42r, may have to cut hole in radiator to fit...
The oil gallery for the head is on the front flywheet end

I have an Autometer Oil Gauge in the cabin that is connected to where the oil pressure sensor goes (see pic). You can see the blue silicon that someone has used to stop the oil leak. not sure where the CAS is. Sorry the pic is not great, best I could do with my phone.

Thanks khubner1. Should I get the head gasket from Mitsubishi or from Repco (or similar)? Or can i buy them online? I assume i will need other gaskets so I will need a full gasket set.

I just recently put a td05-14b from a galant vr4 on my gsr and i'm happy with it so far. fairly straight forward to install, and feels perfect for this motor - not too much lag and heaps better up top. can't wait to crank a bit more boost into it and see how it goes!
The other option i thought about, and is also probably a good choice (as the others mentioned) is the td05-16g. This will be little bit laggier, but better top end again and more power potential.
I've got a genuine mitsubishi one off an evo 3 for sale if your interested.
as for your headgasket, well I actually have the same problem atm and went to mitsubishi to order one today!
you can still get them, but it will probably have to come from another store or warehouse as there are not many around. the option above with the mivec headgasket is probably easier/better/quicker! but you can always go in and try your luck for a 4g93 one, might be lucky

To run the 16g properly but..will need bigger injectors, bigger fuel pump, 609 AFM and a chipped and bayed ECUto run it all..so its not really a cheap path...

As well as work to the front pipe to hook it all up to the 16g dump

Is there a smaller or more cost effective turbo upgrade?
Not looking to break the land speed record. Just a small project where I can get my hands dirty.
Replacing the head gasket is a good start. I will contact Mitsubishi and see if I can get a genuine one?

agreed. but there's not much point upgrading the turbo at all if you don't upgrade these as well!To run the 16g properly but..will need bigger injectors, bigger fuel pump, 609 AFM and a chipped and bayed ECUto run it all..so its not really a cheap path..
even the 14b i would consider vr4 450's and a chip minimum - I'm going microtech, bigger pump, evo 560's
yeah, you have to do this for the 14b aswell. Pretty easy for an exhaust shop though. As well as work to the front pipe to hook it all up to the 16g dump
Psycho:
The 14b and 16g are the easiest and cheapest upgrades. They are nearly identicle to install and fairly straight forward.
Any turbo upgrade should also include fuel and ecu upgrades aswell for safety, and to take full advantage of your new turbo!
the 14b is smaller, so requires less of an uprade package so could possibly be a bit cheaper to do than a 16g. 14b's will probably be a bit cheaper to buy than the 16g's too as the 16g's are more popular

you dont "have" to upgrade the injectors afm and ecu but to get the most out of it you should. im running a 16g without anything else and can't say i've noticed much of a change except maybe a slight delay in the onset of boost but more top end puff

I have a spare EVO ECU, INJ and AFM if you really wanted to go that way
