Ok so I finally finished re installing the motor into my 1988 jspec vr4 today . I spent the last few months rebuilding the bottom end, reconned the head and threw some new pistons in her. This afternoon everything went back in well , but it wouldn't start . I checked to make sure I had fuel coming through which was fine, I checked all of the fuses which seemed fine. Everything is plugged in.
The motor ran fine before I took it out but it blew the head gasket and that why I decided to rebuild it.
Any help of trying to diagnose would be great

Try new plugs :) also check crank angle sensor as well. If that's not working ecu won't tell coils to spark. You can check power to ecu too if you like :)

connect a jumper lead from the negative terminal to engine somewhere......try to start...if it starts

check all engine earths..... and the other end of the cable=check body earths

no start

check you have power at the coils......no power....check all plugs and REPLACE fuses.
then remove relays and spray with contact cleaner before reinstalling. After re-installation try to start....while "feeling relay to see if it
'works"

doesnt start....get drunk

Thanks for the help guys, yes there is fuel coming through just fine, when I put a spark plug on a lead outside of the head and turn the vehicle over there is no spark showing on the spark plug end at all. I have some time on monday and will get in there and try some of your suggestions.
I am just hanging out to drive it.

^Thumbs up for Brian/BMGTZ... he solved the issue with mine. Turns out for mu 1988 J-Spec it was the ignitor plug that mounts on the back of the intake manifold... even though I had contact cleaned them all only 2 months ago... while the motor was out for rebuild the connection got all wet and corroded green. Sandpaper up and some cleaner and it fired straight up.
Good luck!
I've now got 211km on my new motor today & loving it so far :)

Ok finally found the issue today. The wires that run off the back of the cam angle sensor were all broken and twisted around each other. Pulled them off , reattached them and she fired up. Found a split in the radiator and it dropped some oil out of the front of the motor also. So I'm not quite at the driving stage yet . Oh we'll least she's a runner.

Good work on finding this rumbul, and thanks for the follow up

Well after finding a few buggered heater hoses I had one more problem to find. There was a major oil leak coming from under the timing belt cover right by the oil filter housing. So I took it all of again and found there was a leak in the top of the housing gasket, ordered a new one and it will be all good to drive on tuesday hope fully. I have put the evo 3 manifold and turbo on to run the new engine in and I have the new gt28rs garret and kit ready to bolt on at a later date.

Can anyone recommend a good Fuel pressure regulator? I just ordered the walbro from jnz tuning. I accidentally hit the buy now on ebay a few month back and brought a fuel system with twin bosch 044s, filter and can, just incase I get the urge to bolt a big blower on her lol

But have to get the new computer and some decent spark first.

Hey guys just wondering if you could tell me how is the best way to get the cam angle sensor back on correctly? I have it lined up and on with the notches. But how do you set the timing? It can obviously turn to the left or right once its on the head?

You gotta set the timing to set the cam sensor.
Earth the timing connector on the firewall, and adjust cam sensor to specs.

I'm going to say it's the brown connector and set it to 7* btdc. But that's a guess, lol

It's on vfaq, just search there.

Well I got her going today but for some reason I couldn't get the temp gauge to work . Put new coils and leads on and it started first pop and sounded great. Will get some new fuel in her and get the temp gauge sorted so I can take her for a spin in next few days.

The 4ws light is coming on in the dash , any suggestions to what it might be ? It wasn't coming on before I ripped the motor out of it.

Power steering fluid is low if the 4ws light is on.

How much time do you spend in a parking lot with your performance car? If you do a lot of parking lot driving, and hang out in parking lots, chances are you are a ricer, go home and read import tuner. If you’re complaining about noise you should not be modifying your car. You should also consider no longer being a man, please hand in your genitals at the door.

No, that should be the air con temp sensor.
Temp gauge is single spade unit on the front of the thermostat housing.
