Anyone know what is involved or if this is even possible?

I'm having my GTi box rebuilt with new synchros and was just wondering if I was able to get my hands on an Evo 1,2,3 front LSD and shafts would this be a relatively simple upgrade?

Anyone done it?

Look at wavetrac and obx diffs. The following is from the obx listing and says it will not fit the awd:
This auction is for a new limited slip differential from OBX. This differential is for the 95-99 Eclipse / Talon FWD with turbo 4g63 motor. This will not fit the 90-94 years and will not fit AWD models. No speedo gear is included for this differential.

Why it doesn't fit, I don't know. Can it machine down to fit? I don't know. Will the awd crown wheel bolt in and be correct for back lash, I dunno.

Well from memory the fwd cyborg LSD is identicle to the awd LSD

Rob will know more about it

Maybe this one was a 3G, but I thought similar was stated for the 2g

Apparently the bare front diffs are the same for all 1988-1995 FWD and 4WD gearboxes with the codes W5M31, W5M33, F5M2x, F5M3x, and also the 1996+ FWD F5M42 gearboxes (except some FTOs, they were a bit weird).
The bearings and obviously crownwheels fitted were different, but the diff itself and even the speedo gears were the same size.

The FWD Gen2 1600 Mivec CJ4A Mirage RS/Colt/Cyborg (same shape as a CE Mirage in Australia) or CK4A Mirage (CE Lancer shape) were available with a torsen front diff which fit straight into W5M33 gearboxes and similar. However they are extremely rare. The CJ4A torsen would also go straight into a factory KM221 (W5M31) box with only a change of bearings.

The FWD's use a tapered roller bearing on their front diffs, the AWD's use a ball bearing. So changing these models at least is as easy as a bearing swap.
I stumbled on this a while back when I had a Cusco FWD LSD broght over for a FWD W5M33 gearbox rebuild (with welded centre) and I thought WTF?? Its the same LSD as the AWD one but had different bearings on it.

Not much info is around about the OEM front torsen. BUT, if you look at aftermarket LSD's you will find that some LSD brands like Quaife, Cusco and Kaaz etc will have LSD part numbers in a table. Look through and you can see which LSD's can fit between which car transmissions.

Yep most of them are the same and will fit your Proton using your existing driveshafts.
OBX - The OBX is a chinese copy of a Quaife that suits FWD Eclipse with Chrysler engine and gearbox. - Will not fit.
FWD Turbo Eclipse - Any aftermarket LSD listed for the Eclipse turbo FWD will have a W5M33, but has 27 spline axles not 25 like the rest. Same deal for any V6 FWD, FT0, Eclipse, Galant, Magna etc. - Will fit with late model Magna driveshaft parts. Nice upgrade.
EVO 1-3 - The EVO 1-3 front viscous wont work without crownwheel mods and there still may be clearance issues. The factory clutch type and any aftermarket diffs will work.
CJ/K4A - Any Factory clutch type or Aftermarket clutch type LSD that comes from a mirage will have to have its internals flipped or you will be driving -1.5 way.

How about the viscous lsd out of a 4wd cc gsr gearbox? Would this be a straight fit?
Can anyone confirm?

The GSR RS front viscous LSD is physically the same size as an Evo 1-3 front Lsd.
The viscous crownwheel on A Gsr RS although having 58 teeth, when matched with its own GSR output pinion is still virtually the same size as an Evo 63/64 viscous crownwheel with evo output pinion. They both live in W5M33 gearboxes so its only natural that they can swap into eachothers cases.

Appreciate your help with this EVO-00X, the gearbox that comes in the Satria GTi is coded F5M222VRXE and from my research the ratios are the same as the CC GSR gearbox. Also the Kaaz aftermarket lsd part number for the Satria GTi, CC GSR and Cyborg match up - DBM2010

I'm hoping to be able to supply the lsd with my GTi box to the guy that's rebuilding it and have him do whatever bearing swaps are required to make this fit using my existing driveshafts.

Would it be that simple? Apologies but I've pulled engine's apart but gear boxes are another world to me.

Yeah its piss easy to do. Fitting the LSD into a FWD gearbox will require the FWD tapered roller bearings pressed onto the LSD.
Here's a pic I prepared earlier lol... both are Cusco front LSD's. The one on the left is an MZ and has ball bearings on it to suit the AWD case. The one on the right is an RS and has tapered roller bearings on it to suit a FWD case. Either LSD will fit in an AWD or FWD gearbox, it just depends on the bearings you choose to suit the gearbox case.

lol... na you shouldnt give mechanics a bad wrap. Mechanics know a lot about a lot of cars, but you cant expect them to know every minor detail and differences between certain model transmissons unless they specialise in them. Most mechanics send transmissions away to get done anyway whilst they attend to other works.

I noticed you live in Sydney. If you want to take your gearbox to someone who specialises in Mitsu's, take it to Mr Gears at Meek Automotive
He's even been here in this thread if you look back on the 5th December ^^^^ :)

Yeah I'm taking the box to a transmission specialist who's a friend. I always try and approach these guys with the parts already selected, thought out and everything ready to go to avoid any confusion or additional costs when they get to doing the work.
Thanks for the tip regarding Meek though, always good to have a backup.
