These are the actual cost outlays Shayne and I incurred for our dog gear upgrades.

Shayne posted all his parts to me here in Australia, then I sent our gear altogether in the one package to Germany.

Costs were:

Robs 4th dog gear upgrade only plus machining centre diff to clear 4th gear = 700 EURO

Shayne's 3rd/4th/centre diff upgrade = 1500 EURO

Postage of our parts in same package via DHL courier from Australia to Germany =  $236 AU

Customs import fees when landed in Germany = 117 EURO

Return Postage from Germany to Australia = 95 EURO

Shayne's total outlay for his 3rd, 4th and centre diff upgrade including postage = $2,470.38 AU.

My total outlay for the 4th gear only upgrade = $1,242.70 AU

This is with us supplying all of our parts to Matthias:

Rob's parts = Intermediate shaft, EVO III double synchro 4th gear and a double synchro set. Plus centre diff to be machined.

Shayne's parts = Intermediate shaft, EVO III double synchro 3rd gear with double synchro rings, plus EVO III double synchro 4th gear and double synchro rings, plus centre diff.

Its money well spent for piece of mind.

Fark!?  When you list it out like that Rob, it hurts financially!  There's something to be said for ignorance is bliss......  Now I'm thinking of the costs for the Ralliart LSD I have on its way, the machine work that needs to be done on the centre housing and the new pinion gears and spider gears I've just ordered from TMZ......

Exactly, and that's with both of us going in halves with shipping and fees.

Still... it would have saved your gearbox from failing the other week if these parts were in. When you factor in what else the broken internals damaged inside and the hassle of removing and rebuilding the box and putting it back in again, $2,500 is very reasonable.

There's about $4k and 50 million hours worth of investment in my current gearbox in the car so don't feel too bad Shayne lol - and that's without any dog gears. Every little thing adds up when you want to build it right.

Pity I didn't have the dogear 4th to put in it at the time of installation, but I'll build another fresh gearbox on the side with the doggy 4th, Cusco front LSD, 4-spider centre and my preferred mix of ratios  ;) . Thats going in with a beefed up transfer case and driveshaft when I make the move to E85... sometime.... when I win the lottery.

Thats why I going auto.
You havent included 1200 for a clutch either.

But like you say, all these goodies are cheaper than 3 replacement gearboxes

Not yet, the cross shaft has a bit of surface rust on it now, so it'll need to be polished prior to final installation.

also have build the 5th gear, i have no problems with that gear but the ratio are not perfect, stock evo was 0.617 shift from 4th in the 5th are a to high rpm difference. with the 0.666 dsm 5th gear is the difference to short. so i have build a gear in straight cut with a 0.640 ratio, also i can build that gear to use double synchros :-P

fore more informations you can visit my facebook page " Boldt-Mechanics " also you have a special question about other builds like other gearbox you can contact me ;-)

So Andrew Vibert (CVAP) has started re-assembling my gearbox.  Some feedback from him:

"Just an update for those doing the straight cut 3rd /4th gear evo conversion.Make sure you clearance the centre diff bolts as they will hit 4th gear. Also make sure you check the end float on your shafts. I found that 4th gear is actually a bit thicker on the intermediate shaft so the bearing does not go on quite as far. Had to reduce the shim by .5mm. It was far too tight."

Matthias did machine down the outer diameter of the centre diff housing so Rob and I were aware of how close it would come to 4th gear, but you will need to grind down the bolts yourself once the centre diff has been assembled.

Hey guys. I'd like some input from those who have the gears from Matthias. I've read above that the double synchro rings were sent for 3rd and 4th gears. Did you send all three rings for each gear? I guess I'm wondering exactly why he would need these to manufacture the gears. I don't have a problem sending them, just curious.

Thanks,

Bryan

I assumed they would have prints drawn up to locate the provisions for the synchro rings, since they've done quite a few already. Again, no biggy, just curious.

Would anyone in here who has these gears like to share their impressions and/or results?

Am planning to take the car for a proper test run on Friday and put the gearbox through its paces then.  I'm confident that with my driving style (I am relatively gentle on the hardware) and given what Matthias puts his gearbox through (I'm making nowhere near 800+hp!) the gearbox should hold up.
