Hi guys,
I just picked a white hypergear RVR from Toowoomba last week. It's got an actual Evo 3 engine with a fresh rebuilt head running 18 psi. It was tuned at 22psi apparently making 309hp on 4 wheels with this new rebuilt (standard) head, bigger piping, intercooler, exsaust and a walbro 225.
Does 309hp sound legit to you? It does go seriously hard on 18psi. And apparently ran a 13.6 quarter mile.
The main question I wanted to ask is, is it safe to run 18psi all day everyday? It's rare that I'll even push it to 18 pound on a daily run, but I just wanted to make sure it's all good.
Oh and also, there's no BOV. So the turbo chatter sounds awsome. What's your opinion on not running one? The old owner swears by it.
Cheers, Lars

Oh yeah, that's running standard manifolds, standard Evo 3 td05 16g, but with 2.5 inch piping and a 3 inch exsaust.

the turbo chatters sound aint good for the turbo at all, I would definately adding a bov either e8mr one or quality aftermarket and plumb it back into the system
is there pipes on the upper intake ic pipe for running a plumb back????

Haha, I'm definitely not a cuzzy bro
I thought the same but the previous owner said all his cars don't run BOV's. And he had a lot of high performance cars there.
What are your thoughts on the claim of having 309hp at 22psi with that setup?

I'm a believer in BOV's.
Its a tricky subject, because everyone has an opinion, that they "swear by".
Do a bit of research if you think its worth your time. But don't treat any random forum info as golden. (including this. hahaha)
Last time I went down the local strip, I had just made up some new piping, and didnt have a BOV installed.
The car felt awful. It wasn't a subtle change, it was very noticeable. Like hitting a wall when I changed gears. Then wait. . . wait. . . wait, oh, there's some boost, off we go again.
I like blow-off valves.

Do you know how they "tuned" the car for 18psi?? With 300hp at the wheels you should be in the 12's

It sounds a bit funny to me too, that's why I asked. I'll have to just find out myself. Cheers

How much horsepower would you expect out of the setup I've got?

First thing i'd do would be check the tune make sure everything is as it should be.. Could make slightly more hp if the tune wasn't right but then again could loose some. Better to be safe then sorry.

Surge on load (or true surge) kills turbos, not the chatter you experience when letting off the throttle. Blow Off Valves can do very little to protect you from true surge. However, they can (arguably) make an engine feel more responsive.

I don't run a bov, makes instant boost between gears and doesn't jerk and feel sluggish when I come off the throttle like it did when I ran the factory bpv.
And regarding power, mine makes 171awkw at around 13-14 psi standard turbo, Chinese mani, Chinese split dump, 3" full exhaust with metal cat and metal intake pipe with cheap pod. Might be a guide for you.....

I meant- what were they using to tune the factory ECU?

I run my Evo on 18 psi +
I have similar mods to you and have never had an issue...If its tuned correctly then it should be fine.

Thanks boys...
'Apparently' it was tuned as a FWD on their mates dyno who runs a performance shop. How true it all is, i wont know until i tune it myself. However, everything seems like it runs well and im definitely happy with the power, so ill probably just leave it the way it is, drive it and enjoy
