Hi guys,

At a bit of a loss as to what to do so hopefully i can get a little clarification, i've searched everywhere i can find the past few days and haven't really managed to find a lot to work off.

Losing 1st gear currently, pops out when taking off at lights and doesn't want to know about hills either, my issue is that i haven't been able to track down an RVR specific box (it's my daily driver so i wanted to do a straight swap but guess not) so now i'm up for looking at what needs to be done for a rebuild.

So couple of questions - who do does everyone in Brisbane recommend for a rebuild?, will i have possible troubles because internally HSG boxes are slightly different to Evo 3 setups or is it all much the same inside? and is MMZL the actual code for Hypergears or just regular RVR? it's mentioned elsewhere that MMZL are what RVRs have, that they are the same as Evo 3 boxes etc but then find info that contradicts it so i'm a little lost.

Any help would be really appreciated,

Matt

You are talking about a manual one right?
If so the boxes themselves are very similar but I think the gear ratio in the RVR's are different
I can get my hands on a mates Evo box with Mech LSD fitted but need to check with him for a price and confirm the ratios match ...
Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall, torque is how far you take the wall with you.

I've just pulled an RVR gearbox apart and the gear cluster ratios were identical to a CC GSR Lancer. However the diff ratios were a bit unique, with a count of 57/15, whereas the GSR is 58/15, and Evo 3 is 63/15. I can chase up the code on the bell housing.. I'm just not at the workshop presently

I purchased an MMZL box in July 2011 and tore it down (have pics and info).
I read ages ago too that they were allegedly 'similar to EVO III boxes' but that was just a load of shit.

At first glance they look the same as the GSR gearbox internally, with alloy 1st/2nd and large hub 3rd/4th shift forks etc but after further examination there are 3 differences:
1) First gear has 37 teeth - the same amount of teeth as a 1G Eclipse 12/37 first gear = 3.083 first gear ratio.
2) Front diff crownwheel = 57 teeth. I counted 3 times to make sure and yes, its 57 teeth.
3) 5th gear shift fork is cast steel same as GSR and EVO, but the MMZL RVR box has nylon pads on the 5th shift fork.

If your first gear is popping out I'd be looking at replacing your first gear as it might be shit by now, but more importantly your 1st/2nd hub and slider, synchros and synchro keys and springs.
That'll fix it :)

Thanks for the info guys, hopefully this helps someone else who falls into the same hole in the future :)

Though it's going to possibly cause me problems in moving it i've decided to put it up for sale as is, too many projects going at once unfortunately :/

Rob, a VR4 1st gear is. Actually 2.84 or so. 3.08 is gsr and 1g DSM I believe.

How much time do you spend in a parking lot with your performance car? If you do a lot of parking lot driving, and hang out in parking lots, chances are you are a ricer, go home and read import tuner. If you’re complaining about noise you should not be modifying your car. You should also consider no longer being a man, please hand in your genitals at the door.

lol, yeah sorry Tim thanks for picking that up. 3.08 is the 1st gear like the 1G Eclipse as I remember even when Troy and yourself had put a 3.08 1G Eclipse first gear in one of the gearboxes.
My word document table went a bit la-la when I upgraded to Office 2010, have to play around with the margins. But yes, 3.08 is same as 1G Eclipse. GSR is different yet again.

Im sure I have a RVR 37 tooth 3.08 first gear here at home. I will check the condition of it and get back to you Mattio.
Personally I'd reckon swapping it to a longer GSR first gear would be a bit better.

VR4 - 2.846; 1.684 (2nd); 1.115 (3rd); 0.833 (4th); 0.666 (5th); 3.166 (Reverse); 3.866 (Front Diff); 4.9333 (Final)
GSR- 2.917; 1.684 (2nd); 1.115 (3rd); 0.833 (4th); 0.666 (5th); 3.166 (Reverse); 4.933 (Final)

The MMZL RVR box I have has identical shafts and tooth counts to a GSR gearbox...
