What pistons did you get, what piston to wall clearance. Hearing some guys having issues with manleys at 3.5 thou ptw. I will be checking mine prior to assembly.
Also what ring gap?

I used CP's with a 0.02" gap from memory. It was clearenced at the shop and I wasn't given the specs, from my experience, they were toward the max clearence advisable. As a race engine, I wasn't overly concerned, mains were given some margin for the same reason.

I know what you may be getting at Jack, I had big blow pass issues right up till 500+ km on the engine. Has gone to normal levels now, nothing abnormal.

interesting thought processes on bearings, some think larger is good for competition so they don't pick up.

others think tight is better so they don't get pounded and squash the oil out?

Yeah it's a gamble George. I opted for a lager clearence and thicker oil on the theory of less chance to pick one up, and a higher volume of oil flow over a given time. The combo seems to work well with the squirters and hi oil temps, all bar idle when the car is hot. I hold a very consistent 80 psi at load, but barely get the needle off the stop when it's hot at idle. I just keep the revs up (1300ish) till it cools down then switch off.

My decision is not based anything other than what I read in some blue printing books, so when I strip my engine down next, I can give some feedback as to if my gamble paid off.

What theory do you normally apply to your race donks George?

mine is the opposite, my bearing clearances are on the absolute minimum recommended by mitsu.

I did use two sets of main bearings so I get the full groove though.

my piston to bore clearance is also tight, I had the skirts Teflon coated so they didn't stick when it was brand new.

piston crowns are ceramic coated too and no oil squirters

Good info mate. Dare say you have done a shit load more of this than me. One thing I do notice is how 'loose' the motor feels, does worry me at times.

To be eligible for targa west i need to run a 2.0l, so at some point this year need to build one. I unashamedly now steal your ideas. :)

Yup, your right Brian. Homlomogation rules apply, stock crank, block, turbo, brakes, etc.

I would love to build a 9 grand screamer, but I really need to build one engine that suits all events.

just get a stocker....freshen it up....drop in for targa.  remove after. The idea there is just head studs, MLS head gasket, not sure if you ahve to keep balance shafts ...but if not, remove. it will take 18psi and last.......Dont spend shit loads on it for one event per year when you have the stroker

Video from last round of the series. 12th outright, 3rd in class. 4th in class for the series.

Temps only got to 100* or so during the runs. Still a bit too hot but much better than before. We must have found some power with the changes to the turbo exhuast housing, and different dump, so say the times. 4 seconds or so better than our previous best run in this direction. It's coming together for us slowly, so the 14/15 series we should be hunting for some top 10 finishes.

Some logs from the last event.

Cooling: The engine temps are better, still getting hot, but better than before. Borrowed an ally radiator for this event and it seems to be the difference, has about 2.5 liters of capacity over the stock GSR one. The logs show you the Highest, lowest and average values for each device in the top right corner, the temp one shows 130* highest but I found a dicky plug on the sensor so every now and then during a run the coolant sensor went out of limits for less than a second but it still gets recorded. Highest temp was 103* during a run.

Turbo/Exhaust: Felt more willing to rev up top with the changes to the turbo exhaust housing, seems that the back pressure has reduced a bit. Compressor is still falling over really early in the rev range, seems to be nosing over at between 4500 - 5000. I bought 1Jum2nv's 20g today, I will pair that with my ported TD05 exhaust housing and see what we can manage. Intake air temps show how bad the 16g is chopping the air at higher rpm's, it's so far outside it's efficiency area it's almost cruel.

Timing: Still needs lots of work. We changed the way we came onto the straight by using the torque down low and found areas of the map we had never been into eg. Lower rev's and high boost. Just need to tidy some of those areas up.

It's become the slowest and most expensive way to tune a car ever!  :)

Well, got some time so I ripped the back end out to do all the bushes. Most we're stuffed. I'm chasing some aftermarket camber and toe linkages which I ask in the WTB section. Superpro have most of the bushes I need, and the rest will come on new equipment I hope. The stock stuff doesn't like being abused as the photos show. Georgie got some bling! See how long the Chinese arms last. The hard race stuff seems pretty good. SuperPro for the diff mounts and hardrace everywhere else. Not thrilled with the stock style front trailing arm bush but at least it's new and in one piece. And yeah, I'm getting longer bolts for the lower shock mount.

More bits going on. New hankook ventus, gone medium compound instead of softs (on the nice white finz) will come on a few corners later but should last longer than 200 race k's. Rally safe hardware installed. Via national rally licenses and new FAI race suits, we have crawled out of challenge class and into competition class so we get to drop the speed limit for the targa. Yay. Ready for some stickers.
