Thought it was time to put a build thread together as things are starting to progress.

My current setup is a simple bolt on turbo kit, all GSR bits with custom plumbing and VR4 Jspec Intercooler.

I worked out the previous owner had the pistons and rods in backwards, luckily there was just enough clearance and the motor survived. Everything is in the correct way now and clearances are great so plenty of space to dial the insane cams in.

Waiting on a new metal head gasket to arrive this week, planning to clean and check all of the head components this weekend and fit the head and seal her up.

Then it's out with my engine to transfer all of the bolt ons. manifold ported, new kinugawa 20g turbo to be bolted on, LSD fitted to gearbox with new synchros and hopefully whack her all back together and ready for a tune.

Nice build, the vr4 cooler sits perfect behind the GTi bar

Only thing that makes me wonder is why did you go Tomei 290/290?? or do u mean 260?

Engine came with 290's, I was going to change them out for something a little less extreme but seeing as the head was already built and everything was there I thought I'd try and utilise them.

I'll see how the 20g goes with the cams and if required I'll probably upgrade to something bigger later on.

what sort of ECU are you running? I noticed an airflow meter in one pic....that is going to have a hard time dealing with 290 cams at idle.

I have heaps of parts...but never the one I need.

My 93t will be pretty much the same, what do you think of the cp pistons and spool rods?
Build is looking good, should be a bit of fun :)

Thats the current setup which is running a Jap spec GSR ecu (10.5:1 compression ratio + 10psi boost) Won't be running an AFM with the forged setup, I have a haltech E6X and 3bar map sensor to run everything.
Spool/CP combo looks pretty good overall, for an H beam rod the Spools are pretty chunky. I'll soon find out how strong the package is...

Ordered them direct from Rocket Industries. Just look up the part number for a Toyota 3sgte engine, I think I paid just on $300 for heads and mains.

I think from memory I got 3sgte mains and head studs...either way they fit perfectly, I'll double check and confirm.
Actuator that's on the turbo is 17psi, probably lookin to run that to begin with, I'm hoping the motor could handle 20psi+ eventually, and I might have to run higher boost to make the most of the cams.
All depends on how the gearbox handles everything really, and drive shafts. I'll be running a factory evo LSD in the GTi gearbox which I can't imagine will be overly friendly on the driveshafts. I'm not the type to smash gears so hopefully that's my saving grace...

As for comp ratio I think it's still running standard comp, I would have liked to go higher as I find comp+boost really street friendly.
The current setup is just insanely torquey, full boost comes on at about 1,500-2,000rpm but it makes 1st and 2nd gears pretty useless due to wheel spin.

The old setup would have made around 140-150kw atw, so it'd be nice to be able to crack 200kw atw.

All depends what is manageable given it's FWD, really just after a reliable strong setup, I'm really happy with the current setup but the motor feels a little worn now so that's why I've gone forged.

Yeah, I had EVERYTHING ready to go for a 2L conversion but decided against it at the last minute.

It's engineered as a turbo 1.8L so this also saves the hassle and cost of re engineering too.
