Nah man, stock trans.
Yeah I don't like the auto. I've driven plenty of other automatic cars. These ones just seem to take forever to get moving. My last auto RVR was the same.
I'd imagine with a higher stall RPM, it would be even worse.
Each to their own I guess, I'd prefer manual anyday but I don't go drag racing much, which it seems is all this auto is good for.

Same eproms as ECU eproms. I use Moats eprom reader/burner to read or write eproms and tuner pro to open bins to modify.

Yeah I don't like the auto. I've driven plenty of other automatic cars. These ones just seem to take forever to get moving. My last auto RVR was the same.
I'd imagine with a higher stall RPM, it would be even worse.

Higher stall gets you into the power area if the right rpm is chosen to suit the turbo/power characteristics of the engine.

Your stock stall is like having a manual at 1800rpm (or less depending on whatever the flash stall is) and then letting the clutch out without letting the rpm drop and expecting a good launch. A higher stall allows more rpm to build before the converter starts to feed torque to the input shaft of the gearbox.

When you didn't brake stall at the drags you were relying on the stock "flash stall" speed.......which is as you realise too low when you leisurely moved off and had to wait till you hit 18psi before anything really happened. When you brake stalled at the drags you got a decent launch because it was at a point where the turbo was spooled, 4k or so. Imagine the same launch but with only a few seconds till it hit boost, that's what a correctly set stall speed does.

↑↑↑ A very poor explanation, but I hope you get the point I'm trying to make...............I'm sure someone will chime in with some more info.

You gotta brake stall them. It may take 30sec to build boost on big turbo cars. Have to keep the turbo small, or add nos. No one has built a trans brake, they say the gearbox is too weak.
trans brake puts the gearbox in first and reverse at same time and releases reverse at launch.

Or a high stall. Or start brake boosting at the water trap. Then you need a big trans cooler.

antilag might help spool, maybe a injector in the exhaust manifold before turbo....

So you want to keep it now Mo? That'd be good :)

Dont know if Benny's already sorted you out, but i have a spare manual box out of my white HSG plus access to all the other gear for the conversion.... However part of the box has an external chip out of it, you'd have to have a look at it first. Cheers

Thanks Lars, I was just being silly. I don't think I'll change it. It's a lot nicer to drive now than it was before and its good having the switch to be able to flick it back to smooth auto.

I normally brake stall it when launching. Even get a little front wheelspin sometimes, just for some reason it took a lot longer than usual that night to build boost, and Nigel was telling me that I was gonna cook the trans if I kept brake stalling.. I've no idea about them so thought better to be safe and heed his advice. Also it was loading the engine and overheating.

To me it's a comfy van not a race car, so I'm not too fussed about going fast or good 1/4 times etc.

Do these converters have a lock up clutch?

No. No lock up clutch. They are a genuine 4sp auto.
Brake boosting definately heats up the tranny. A trans cooler is a must have.
There is a few auto dsm launch vids on utube. Have a look.

Lol Lars, come help me do it and I won't have an excuse. :P

As in an air cooler Jack? From stock it has a line that passes through the bottom tank of the radiator.

Does brake stalling wreck the trans?

You should fit a trans cooler and take the pipe out of the bottom radiator tank. You can use a old aircon condenser, they have the flow and are pretty big.
hot oil definately wrecks a auto, it cooks all the rubbers inside.
will brake boosting with a cooler wreck a trans? It places more stress on it so- yes it might. The same as racing a engine might wreck it, or driving fast around corners might crash it.
cool oil will help it live longer. If the trans oil isnt nice and pink, better change it quick.

Nice articles Jack ;)

As it happens I have a cc lancer wagon with a spare A/C condenser which should fit nicely in front of the other cc lancer condenser I have used for my W/A intercooler system.............I can feel a bout of mad scientist action about to go down! Ducting! shrouds! alloy plate!.............mwahaahahaaaa!

Its hard to form the alloy plate unless you anneal it first.
or dougmo uses that corrugated plastic board.

I first came across julian edgar when he was in zoom magazine they were building up that cb cyborg. It was cool. After, they turboed a dohc excel (and boosted it till it blew at like 14psi or something) and a good few other tech builds and projects. Love it!
