Hi All,

I thought I'd start a spill about my van !
htc 020.jpg

In August this year I purchased a L300 turbo van off gumtree with a Cyclone DASH motor in it , the previous owner stated that it had overheated and had the head redone but couldn't get it to start ( and me being gullabol i belived him). So on closer inspection once i got it home i was soon to relize that the microtech ECU was incorrectly installed as when i went to see if or what would happen when i tryed to start it WOW smoke everywhere fried ECU, well that started a chain of reactions, Like check for compression...... None on three cylinders whilst doing that check for oil pressure none there either ........ At this stage i have got the shits totally and ready to burn it, I've bought someone else's problem.
Luckly for me i had some luck with Microtech as they fixed my ECU for free and i have in my shed a ship load of spares from my first build of a 4g64 which i incorrectly purchased for that but will fit this 4g63 Cyclone DASH engine

So the next stage for this pain is get all her gear off, Block out and ready for a bit of TLC. I have delivered it to my local engine builders to remove the pistons and crank then measure the block for any signs of wear. Once all of that is completed BG Engines will install forged crank, manley rods, Forged pistons and all new ARP bolts, I have ordered a new oil pump from the US purchased all new gaskets, water pump, light weight pullys sent the head to RAMS heads for service and clean up. just need to chase up a good clutch and pressure plate and i'm set for when my block returns.

I will keep regular up dates to this and if any has any questions on what has been done or how to do it to a van ask away

cheers L300 turbo

another gumtree victim, i hear it every week oh well you live and learn i guess

just tying up some loose ends on a 4g63T twin cam narrow block conversion into a L300 AWD not much left now , just ecu wiring fluids bleed clutch and on the dyno she goes , nothing spectacular just running what ever boost it makes on the actuator. the td04 should make it really zippy, would make a great work car.

Hi All,

Well my engine builder rang me the other day and the news is not good the block is rat shit and only good for scrap. ( yep another gumtree victim) So things aren't all that bad i did put a far bit of cash into a 4g64 block taking it 50 thou oversive, Forged crank, arp rods, manley pistons so the plan is now to put a 2.4l set up  in it with multi point injection instead of the cyclone dash set up  (cyclone dash head and intake manifold will prob sell) .

will let you know how i go, it's been a bit slow at the moment but with christmas on our door step should have some time tp play

Is it a narrow block?
Cause all the later gear will suit.
The hyundai g4js 2.4, g4jp 2.0. The magna 2.4, etc.
The g4js is the 2.4 block the usa guys are using as replacements/upgrades for the evo7-9s
Google it up and check it out

I know jamo. But guys keep blowing up/ cant find/ etc, 2.0, and 2.4 blocks. And I reckon its the best source of good blocks.
It seems noone here in oz looks at them as parts donors for mitsis.
I wish I had the time and money to be stuffing those twin cam hyundai engines in everything from ce mirage to express wagons.
Just quietly, hyundai do a version of the 4b11 as well, but its too new (expensive) to even interest me yet. But maybe one in a little clubman would be cool later

Hyundai 4g63/4 work ok for the evo 1-3 guys but the late ones have a heap of different things that makes it not worth fucking around with. The magna 4g64 is what we use for 4-9 and are only 250-$300 complete. Also the express is evo 1-3 bell housing pattern all the way through to now. I wouldnt be keen on taking a 4g64 past 20tho over if you are running forced induction at any stage as the bore gets too thin.

If the express is narrow block like you say caged then they wont suit.

I know the hyundai are different in tooth count on timing belt so cam/crank gears are different. I havent read much about other differences. But its not me doing research for a conversion so there is probably heaps I have missed

From what i belive i have a 4g63b narrow block and a 4g64 wide block and from what i can work out from looking thru the gasket catalog i have a few options available but whats the best ?

Caged: yes i was palnning putting forced induction on the 4g64 that is why i got it built like that iv'e read heaps about what they do in the U.S and it seems the norm, the bloke that built my block told me it would be good for no more than 20psi ( cost me $3000 and i included a forged crank) and i only want to keep up with traffic cause van carrys 800kg all the time

Sorry I meant express's are evo 1-3 narrow and wide pattern and no evo 4-9 pattern. Autos and 16v 4g64s seem to be wide blocks. My first turbo l300/express was 16v 4g64 and did 280whp @20psi on a std motor with just a cam.

Hey all,

Well today i got stuck into the first steps in this change over. I started this morning with a full degrease and hand wash of the engine bay in the turbo van looks much better now well at least you dont get grease all over you, Then i removed enginge and gearbox and fully degreased all parts as well from the non turbo van. Now the plan is all new gaskets through the bottom end then install into turbo van and refit cyclone dash head, turbo, microtech and hopefully all goes well.

Hey All,

Been in to it again to day stripped the 64 block sucessfully did a balance shaft removal, removed the bearings spun them round and back in little tricky with pistons and crank still in, Once again more cleaning, checked oil pump repacked and ready to go again, I also drilled a drain hole in the sump for the oil return. Shortly i will start removing the oil cooler from the van cause i cant hook it up with this 64 engine for some reason the oil filter housing is different to a 63 same with the front case maybe something to do with narrow and wide blocks any way to late now. So tomorrow hopefuly the rest of my gaskets I've been waiting on arrive tomorrow and we see more progress.

cheers Matt

Got a big day planned for tomorrow i will hopefully get this thing back together and get i cranking

Hi all,

Been hard at it again today i finally have made some progress, I have it 99% back together. Its been a long week starting with stripping my 64 van totally then stripping the turbo van and replacing just about everything after it was all pulled to peices and washed, I tried to start it tonight after checking the base timing and all the rest of it and all i got was a few firers and 2 huge back fires and some flames to with it so i will check that out in the morning since the neighbours are not real happy considering it was 11pm I couldn't see any problems but they did.

I have added a few more pics see what you think
