So I recently got a gsr, which had a rebuilt engine a couple thousand km ago.

I was finding it hard to select gears and often crunched, so I did the clutch drag test and she moved forward at above 7k so it there is definitely clutch drag. It also had a bit of a rough idle often around 1.5k, sometimes up towards 2k and had trouble starting. A bit later it started to develop a rattle and then when I almost got home it would no longer idle, if you didn't keep the throttle open the revs just dropped straight to 0.

I've checked the IAC and the coils are fine and it moves in and out a little bit when turning on the ignition so I assume this is fine, but I don't have a reference to know if it is moving right. I checked the timing and it appeared to be way out firing with the tdc mark way before the markings. I then found the rattle was the crank pulley bolt was loose, and the pulley has some play because the key way is worn so this is probably putting the mark out a bit.

Could all of this have been caused by the clutch drag, or is there something else up too?

What you have is exactly what happened to my 4g93 if you pull the harmonic balancer off you will Likly find the back side of it has been gouged away. This happened to me twice unfortunatly the best way to rectify this is to change the entire crank and harmonic balancer assembly.

New crank new timing gear new balancer
You can source all of these from a sohc 1.8. To do it right you'll also want to change the main and rod bearings.

I'll post some photos of what happens when you try drive for 2 lots of 10 hours on a bung balancer. Tonight. Unless rob/mikey want to raid my rides threads and post up the carnage before then

The back side of the balancer keyway is widened about half a mm on one side and the dust shield worn a bit too. The crank end, key and sprocket look fine to me.

as promised heres what happen the second time the keyway fails.the first time i had just as you describe nut backed off balancer locating notch elongated timing gear looked ok but was badly scored from behind the dust plate was also damaged and the keyway was half destroyed.

here the damage from the second time now this is much worse because i kinda had no choice but to drive on it. didn't properly diagnose it until i got home. from Sydney problem had just started to appear right before the trip.

key way and timing gear on crank as you can see keyway half mangled timing gear has come back about 2' crank notch damaged

IMG_0487_zps037e23a7.jpg

a better shot of damage to the crank you can see where a part of the keyway has gouged a tail into the crank can also see about 2mm of gap in keyway grove

[img]http://i27.photobuck...21017d.jpg[img]

here the balancer it had a good 1cm of free-play notice there is NO keyway notch it's completly warn away

photo showing just how off skew the balancer was

IMG_0481_zps1013f65a.jpg

damage to dust cover and timing cover

this second time the end nut kept its proper torque which made diagnosing the issue MUCH harder had i known i would have stayed in sydney an extra day and replaced the balancer and key-way so i at-least got all the way home

find skip bin where you covertly dump entire 4g93....source 7 bolt evo123 4g63 front cut and install.

BRIAN
Black evo 1 full road rego and done properly/legally

At this stage the only thing that will be going in is a forged 93t. I love the 63t but I'm not sure if I'd ever be entirely happy with having an evo that isn't an evo. Try convince me why I should :P

Better a car that goes like a evo at least. Stealthy is the key.

Just glue it on and build a 63. Grab a 6 bolt sonata engine and a set of forged pistons = vroom vroom peow.

why try hard with a 93 when  63 does it easy.

not trying that hard tbh just forged internals because weak rods. once you overcome those rods it's pretty smooth sailing for power on a 93. just do what you'd do to a 63. admittedly your never going to have as much torque and will probably top out at a lower overall power figure but 200 - 250awkw is very doable

I buried a entire 265 hemi in the chook pen of a rental place once. Suprise when they develop that little bit of land.

Sump full of milky oil still. Straight out of the wheelbarrow into the previously prepared hole. Nearly went in straight after it.

Haha, not that hard to build a decent 93t daily streeter. I've got a 496ci BBC HK Kingswood pro street project that will satisfy my desire for torque once it's completed. We'll see. Once the Kingswood is done, might look at dropping a 63t n/s rwd into something different. Came up with some plans a few years back when I was bored in first year of uni to drop one into a LH Torana lol

My dream is to stick a '63t n/s in a MkII escort, supra 5 spd, using evo/gsr rear diff on a custom 4 link rear end. 900kg, 400hp, RWD......... be fuck'n sick.

I HATE BEING BIPOLAR........IT'S AWESOME!!
